Yea, I know some poachers that use this round for every season except gun season. Usually in Mingo county in WV, where you can't gun hunt bucks due to a mamoritorium. When I lived there, I used to try to turn them in, but little good it does.

Doesnt much matter what you do to deer if you are a WV resident...they are not going to nail you. I have been told that poaching is looked at as "population control". When I first moved to Morgan county WV I videoed a group of guys poaching deer one night using a night vision lens. They were road hunting and shot several deer in my upper field. I taped them retireving the deer, loading them into thier truck and even caught the tags on it as they pulled off. I turned it over to WV DNR the next day. That was 2 years ago and the same guys are still "road poaching" probably as we speak. Living in WV I am sure that you have heard " Buck season opens the 4th of July." I am sure by the sound of it that these guys are using Hornets.
I personally use my Hornet for crows, chucks, fox, and the occasional yote.

Ive not been here in a long time, but it never ceases to amaze me that the discussions about ethical calibers go on. IMHO aside from the laws in your state, there is no unethical caliber only unethical shots.(Within reason. Noone in their right mind would go elk hunting w/ a 22 hornet) I would not attempt a body shot at a deer w/ a 22 hornet from 100 yds out. That would be unethical. However I would not have a problem climbing into my tree stand and poking one in the ear with it from bow range. And as far as the 6mm/243 minimum, I would put my 22-250 against anyone w/ a 243 @ 200yds. Better yet my wife, and her 222. Mind you she knows it would be unethical to shoot a deer in the shoulder from 200 yds w/ that gun, but she would stick it in its eye and go tag it.
Sorry if this seems to be a flamer for my first post in over 3 months.

Buts whats really bad in some areas of WV is poaching is infectious. You see these guys, pulling out really nice 8 and 10pts. (in full velvet). You start thinking to yourself, whats the use. Then gun season comes in and all you see is scrub bucks. You wonder where all the big bucks are. So young hunters, (who started off good), now start trying to convince themselfs that its what you got to do to get a big buck. If they don't kill it,somebody will. There goes the vicious cycle. DNR's genally are underfunded as it is in most states. I bet WV thats an understatement. I know some top notch wardens in Southern WV. They don't take no crap, and are like hounddogs on certain poachers when they get them in thier sights. But its like speeders. So many people doing it, that when someone gets pulled over, you slow down for 200 yards and then resume what you were doing.

It is not only unwise to use a 22 Mag in Texas to kill deer, but it is also illegal. Rimfires are prohibited from being used to take deer. Centerfire 22 cal is legal though I don't know why. The minimum caliber should be 6mm/.243 period.

.243/6MM should be the minimum caliber legal for deer everywhere!
There is no good reason to shoot a deer with ANY .22! Centerfire or Rimfire!
The .22 rim. mag is the poachers choice , followed closely by the .22 Hornet!
