Full power loads will take out a wolf or wolf sized animial with no problem at all. Also you can load it down for small game, as my friend and i use to do.
I swaged a lot of light weight bullets for my Hornet useing fired 22lr cases for the jackets! I'd push the jacket into the swage die "backwards", to make a "solid nose" and then we would use them on rabbits ect.. They also worked well in my 12 ga .222 combination gun too.
Another thing we use to do, useing a Lee hand loader. We took a fired case, pushed out the old primer, and then pushed in a new primer. Then we took a 22 cal. pellet, and pushed it HEAD FIRST into the neck of the Hornet case. (NO powder) "Instant" pellet rifle!!
I shot a lot of pest around my place with that combo, and there's not much noise either.

For Squirrle and self defense.
What one do you think I should get?

Man am I going to get blasted for this, but here goes....
The 22 Hornet must be a hell of a deer gun, because I have a buddy that killed his first 10+ (gun season) deer with one. (I saw several of the kills) Now he can shoot...and he was shooting mostly head/neck...so it's kind of a loaded question.
He has changes his ways, though. He's all the way up to a .243 now! LOL
BTW...a 22 Hornet is legal where we were hunting. Sheesh!

I used to use a ruger bolt action in 22 hornet. Great little gun. You can shoot squirells with it, just shoot them in the head. They do an awful lot of damage behind the shoulder. I also killed a lot of ground hogs out to 150 yards with it. Even rabbits through the head. Coyote can be taken but 100-150 yards is pushing it.

Hey Pro-Line, I knew someone in Texas that took several whitetails with a .22 mag, all were neck shots and dropped right away. Pretty risky hunting I must say, I mean why take a chance? As far as coyotes are concerned, shotgun news has been advertising an old 8mm Mauser (maybe a Yugo) as a "truck gun" for ranch use or whitetails. [link]http://mitchellsales.com[/link] Ammo is pretty cheap and quite effective.
