I assume you are talking about the .17 HMR? Or are you talking about the new .17 Mach-2?
I think Ruger us the only one making a semi in the 17 HMR at this time. It will be interesting to see who get their 17 Mach 2 on the market first, as all the major rimfire makers are in on 17 Mach 2.
A Ruger 10/22 Mag, can be converted into a 17 HMR by swapping out the barrels. Not very hard to do, takes about 10 minutes. 17 HRM drop in replacement, heavy, and up grade barrels are available now from barrel makers, brownells, and other shooting suppliers. I imagine that 17 Mach 2 replacement barrels will be coming very soon, if not out already.

the centerfire .17 Remington (as well as the .204 Ruger) can be made from the Ruger mini14 and if properly done is a superb rifle.....wonderfully accurate and reliable. But finding brass can drive you up a wall.....
As far as I know the .17 Remington isn't commercially available in a semi auto.

Stay away from the 597, it'll give you nothing but trouble. I wpuld also suggest a bolt or lever action instead. At the cost of those shells, I know how easy it is to get a little trigger happy! $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Unless your dead set on a semi auto and assumin where you talking about the 17hmr I would definetly look into the Marlins,Savags,Rugers. I belive all the difrent brands of 17 hmr's have shown to be accurate. I do know the Marlins are one of the best
Seriously mines super accurate, couldnt ask for anything more (except a descent trigger but its easily fixed).
