First a few questions should be answered before anyone reccomends one over the other.

#1 - Do you ever plan on taking a shot at an elk or moose at or beyond 500 yards?

#2 - Do or will you practice enough to take advantage of the added energy, velocity, and recoil of a cartridge like a 300 ultra?

#3 - Do you like a lot of muzzle blast and a lot of noise?

They all have their place but unless you can say yes to all three of these questions there really is no reason for the ultra mag under 99% of elk and moose hunting conditions. While the regular old 300 Win mag may not be as "sexy" as the other two it will be perfectly adequate for the same 99% of elk and moose hunting conditions. With good reloading it can be bumped up in power very near the 300 Wea. Mag.

I personally see the 300 ultra as a very specialized elk cartridge. My vote would go to the 300WSM but since that one isn't on your list I vote for the 300 Win. mag.

Well all depends on what you're looking for and if you handload. Let's be honest in 99.9 % of the time one does not think of shooting at elk beyond the 300 yard mark and most can't shoot good enough to ensure a one shoot kill under hunting conditions. The ole 300win mag is a very good round and the least recoil of the three. The weatherby is a good round also I've owned two 300's. The RUM IMHO is the least desireable out of the three. It uses alot more powder than a 300 win mag with what I think is a minimum gain.
If you insist on the latest new offering the 300WSM has propbaly the best performance to powder out of the new offerings.

I believe my next gun will be a short handy lever action for deer, bear and moose in the bush. It will be a Savage 99 in .300 savage.

Well, that would depend on the use. I would throw out the WBY right away because of the cost and availability of the brass and ammo. For extremely long shots, beyond 400 yds or so, I would take the Ultra, but I wouldn't even want to take a shot at an animal at that range anyway. For all practical purposes, I see no more need for anything more powerful (in the .30 class) than the .300 Win. It can handle anything on the continent with out looking back, the ammo is cheaper, barrel life longer, and it has stood the test of time. If I wanted more power for bigger game, then I would go completely into the next few classes of calibers and snag a .375 H&H!

If you have well above average shooting skills and are willing to practise a great deal, the 300ultra does offer some advantages at distances of 400 yards and over. For most people though the 300win mag is a far better choice. That leaves the 300wby out altogether as the win mag is more practical for most people and the ultra produces more velocity.
