Thanks
That's what I've been able to glean....I found a very similar write up in my "Cartridges of the World"
They are both great loads....both kinda mimic each other with a little advantage to the 338-06 at least when you look at certain numbers.
But, since I'm terminally CHEAP...I think I will opt for the 35 Whelen as the ammo over the counter is a little cheaper. I load...but not a ton.
Besides...the 35 Whelen swap barrel combo kit (from Midway and for my Savage) will save me even more $$ than the swap barrel 338-06 rig.

I look at it this way, if you have a barreled action that you aren't going to ever use, than swap it out. Don't forget it still cost you for the rifle. Now if you go out and buy a donor rifle, it still is going to cost you bucks for it, last remington I bought was $350. Now add that to a new barrel kit, stock if you want to change out, you are talking equal to if not more than a new rifle. For me to buy a donor gun is to get a rifle that will be custom and shoot extra good as compared the standard rifle. Just my opinion.

Well, the way I'm looking at it....I have a Savage 110 in 30/06
It's bolt face and magazine will be fine for the 35 Whelen Swap barrel kit, which is $175 complete with everything I need for the conversion.
Since I have an 8mm/06 the 30/06 is a lot of overlap....I can afford to do without it...I could probably sell the 30/06 barrel.., it's in excellent shape, .. another savings
So really, for the $175 and very little work, I'll get my 35 Whelen
The $$ I save I'll store away for the 375 H & H that is farther down the wish list.
