RE: 308 0r 30-06
Better? Depends on what it's used for. The only real difference in the two cartridges is the action lengths they are chambered for. The .06 will have more downrange energy, but both will kill game up to Moose equally well. If I was going after Grizzly, then I'd want the .06.
If you're looking for a lightweight rifle, then I'd go with the .308 because of it's short action and mild recoil. Just my humble opinion.

For 165gr and below, the 308Win is my choice. Short actions seem so much easier to work up dynamic loads for. I can pretty well equal 30-06 performance with 165gr and below. You also have nice compact bullet design, with a tad light actions and factory rifles available. Seems like the most ideal deer gun available. I would have no quams and have taken my 308win from Deer to Moose.
For greater than 165gr bullet choices, the 30-06 walks off and leaves the 308. If you want to shoot 200gr bullets, I think you need a 300win mag, but the 30-06 will do it with ease.
For me all you need is a 308win and 300win mag (or equiv like WSM, weatherby, RUM), for just about anything.

Oh boy, the eternal .308 vs. .30-06 debate.
I choose the .30-06 because of the (slightly) higher velocity and energy. Not to mention that it's proved its value a million times over in the past century, and it will remain a classic for years to come. The recoil doesn't bother me one bit (I really don't notice much of a difference between the two), but some people psyche themselves out before even shooting it.

The .308 is available in a number of carbines and that's great for hunting deer in cover....(example...Rem M7, Browning micro medalian, Winchesters compact series)
Unless you wanted a carbine length rifle I'd pick the .30-06.......but there's still very little difference.

I can barely tell the difference in recoil myself. I went with the 30.06 cuz of the range of bullets you can get. 150 gr for deer, and bigger for any other game out there. It's quite handy to have a rifle with that range. (i don't reload, so it's factory ammo for me).
I would say both are good however for about 90% of anything you hunt. The 30.06 will have slighty more energy.. go to federals website and look up the ballistics of each.

I like my .308.......and I like my 30-06. Thing is that I have loaded 220 gr bullets in the 30-06 and they shoot fine. You cant do that with the .308. I have even loaded 130 gr bullets in the 30-06 and have found a hot accurate load. So I give the edge to the 06.
