I have been primarily a water fowl hunter but I am now looking to do some boar/whitetail hunting.
I just recieved a Savage 99e and a Winchester 88. Both are in good condition and 308's.
Can anyone tell me their reputations and if they have a preference between the two?
Do you think they will be good "multi-pupose" guns for what I want to do?

I have a model 99 in 250 savage and my dad has a win 88 in 308. Both shoot straight, have nice stocks and feel comfortable. The 308 will do what ever you want it to do, I do not think you could go wrong with either gun. My advice would be to pick the one that fits you the best.

I do not know about the guns. Are you a Norfolk Tides fan or just a fan of the tide in Va.? I live in hampton and we have a AAA baseball team in Norfolk called the Tides.

vatidefan, is there a reason that you can't keep both of them? Both are rifles I would LOVE to have in my safe.
If you can keep only one, for me it would be the Savage. Very strong, reliable action with no malfunctions. The Win. 88 has a lot of small parts in the lever action that could cause problems.
But the 88 has a detachable mag and the savage has a rotary mag.....
Go with the Savage.

Depending when the Model 88 was made could mean that the rifle could be worth a few extra bucks. The 88 is a very good rifle that will only increase in value as time goes on.

Hi vatidefan,
They are both superb rifles. If you can keep them both.....do so. Shoot them both and see if you develop a preference. If so......puzzle solved. If you must choose one over the other.....the Winchester 88 has taken on a near cult status....and continues to esculate in value. A decided consideration!
I've owned both Savage 99's and Winchester 88's. They are both keepers!
Best wishes,
Dave

Thanks everyone for the input. I can keep both. My step father doesn't hunt anymore and when I asked him about the guns he said "go ahead and take em. I'm not doing anything with them."
I think I'm gonna take them both and see which one I feel better shooting. Thanks again!
