Default Savage 99 .375WIN....Finally

I've been looking for this for a while now. Found a few during my search but their asking price was too high. Finally found this through a member on another forum and we were able to work out a deal.

I wanted an Ohio legal Savage 99. Ohio requires straight walled cartridges only. So that really limited my options.

It's in nice, but used shape. I bought it to carry it and hunt it, so it's exactly what I was looking for.

I shot it at 100 yards leaning off the porch rail, and was happy with the results. Shooting Winchester super x 200 grain.... With handloads and a proper bench I think it'll be a good shooter.

Now I just gotta find some deer this fall.

I am not normally nosy but I can't seem to refrain from being so on this particular occasion and feel free to tell me to unstick my nose from your business. But would you mind greatly telling me what price you landed on for that particular gem? I am sure you figured out through your searches the rarity of that particular cartridge in a Savage 99. Especially in such good shape. That is rare shape for 99's as most people bought them to hunt hard cover and they usually got pretty beat up. I don't have the same fondness for lever guns my dad did but I do still have a pretty soft spot for 99's.

I paid $1,000 shipped to my ffl in a pretty decent hard sided rifle case.

It was still more than I wanted to spend honestly on a rifle.... As I already have a .44mag marlin, a .45-70 marlin, and many shotguns that all will kill ohio deer without issue.... . But three things influenced my decision.

#1 I had an offer for another rifle that was way over what I had paid for it. So I sold that one to a guy that wanted it and came out ahead several hundred dollars on that deal.

#2 I don't think I'll lose money on it. I intend to keep it, and I expect prices will only continue to rise. Should I ever decide to sell it or need to sell I should be able to at least break even I would think.

#3 I just wanted it and was willing to pay for it. It's one of those things that is rare enough, that if you want it you're going to have to pay. So few ever come up for sale in the first place, I knew that if I found a decent looking one in a certain price range that I would jump on the deal.

As for if it's worth that much.... or if I got a good deal or a bad deal... I really can't say. I saw prices anywhere from around a thousand to up near three thousand for these rifles. This rifle looks pretty decent and shoots good... So I feel ok with what I spent. But it still felt like allot of money to me for something as trivial as just having an ohio legal model 99..... I don't regret the purchase though. I wanted one of these since Ohio changed it's rifle laws, and now I have it!

I will say my older model .300 savage is a better looking rifle with the Schnabel foreend and such. This was sold as a "brush gun" I believe and the wood isn't quite as nice.

But that's what they came in for the .375win, so that's what I had to go with.

I'm looking forward to working up a load and seeing how good it will actually shoot.

I was pretty pleased with the group it shot just leaning off the porch at 100 yards. So I think it's a pretty good shooter. And recoil was milder than I was expecting. My wife will be able to shoot this one without issue. Whereas the .45-70 had a little too much punch for her to handle comfortably.

To give you a small idea, I just found 2 .375win in a search, out of 3K savage 99's. One looked to be in pretty much the same condition as yours on the outside and it's listed for $1899. The other is a much better grade condition that looks like it was a safe queen and never shot for close to $6000. So yes I think you did fine and you could probably turn right around and make 200-300 on top of what you paid pretty easily if you wanted. I myself am looking, not hard, for one in 7mm-08. The old man fell in love with that little cartridge many years ago and I have come to love his AR 10 in that round. But I refuse to pay in upwards of $2000 for a damn lever gun that I'll be taking out into brush. Not to mention having to live with an angry wife for spending that kind of money on something I'd more than likely be scratching up.

I want one in 7mm-08 as well. But I'm not willing to spend the money for it. Ridge Runner has one in 7mm-08 I believe, and If I remember correctly he's shot a truck load of deer with and maybe some bear as well.

Congrats, Jake. I sure hope that guy don't end up crying in his beverage. What's done is done and it sounds like he won't get it back. Happy huntin'.
