That is a gorgeous gun. I understand why it is kept as a sole investment piece.

JOC was a writer when I started out in the early 50's. Along with Warren Page, Pete Brown and Col. Townsend Whelen were the primary hunting writers of the day.

O'Connor did not talk all that much about rifles. He was more of a hunter/writer. Page and Whelen knew far more.

I would not want a rifle with somebody's name blazed on it or the over done fluer-de-lis and lasered in false checkering.

To each his own. If you like it then fine.

Same crap different forum I see......
Your really gonna talk smack about JOC on this forum too???
Just to fill those in that are not active on other forums. Savage 99 made many bizarre comments like..... "Most of us know more about guns and as much about hunting as JOC did." He obviously doesn't like Jack O'Connor.

O'Connor had 4 books of rifles and calibers in the late 50's and early 60's. Just cause you don't like JOC, you could at least get his collection of books correct. That's hand checkering.....and thanks for the backhanded complement.

I see in just 29 posts that Savage 99 has made an azz of himself more than once, LOL! The guy obviously doesn't know jack chit about JOC and the comments on the Win rifle were pretty sorry to say the least! No wonder all the old timers are saying this site has gone to hell in a hand basket when a nice thread like this goes down in the toilet for no reason! Here's another one of his gems on a thread regarding Browning rifles and I'm surprised the Moderators didn't zap it for the racist comment he made!

"Most avoid Nip made guns. There is not much pride in owning a Nip made gun."

Green with envy? LOL, no way! It's the rifle I don't like, JOC was ok, just not my favorite back then.

However I was into precision target shooting as well as woods hunting with a .358 Win. JOC did none of that.

JOC wrote well of pursuing a big horn ram high in the Rockies.

He did not do well with his chapter "Picking your expert" in "The Hunting Rifle".

He wrote about the late Col. Townsend Whelen.

"Towney was a prolific writer.. Actually in a long but thin carreer as a big game hunter Col. Whelen shot no vast amount of game. What he did shoot was mostly deer. I believe he killed only on grizzly in his life and only four mountain sheep. .............."

And on and on Jack goes ripping every other gun writer.

I have lost respect for Jack O. after reading what he wrote about others.

JOC never spoke a bad word about anyone including Elmer Keith (and he could have given Keith's animosity). I didnt perceive any bad words against Col. Whelen when he was brought up.

"Towney was a prolific writer.. Actually in a long but thin career as a big game hunter Col. Whelen shot no vast amount of game. What he did shoot was mostly deer. I believe he killed only on grizzly in his life and only four mountain sheep. .............."
How is this ripping on Whelen??? Sounds like JOC was being kind.

Whelen's hunting career is really only in Canada. He was never a world hunter in different terrain. His hunting claim to fame is being a deep forest hunter. There really isnt much else to say about his hunting accomplishments. He was a re-loader and experimented with wildcat cartridges regarding his civilian career.

JOC spoke of Col. Whelen rather well stating he was a big influence on pushing manufactures for better stocks on production guns. Col. Whelen comes from a military background and that may be your connection with him.

Perhaps you should start a Col. Whelen thread and stop crapping on the JOC thread???

and yea...I don't like the rifle either. It doesn't shoot for crap and needs custom handloads to get anything out of it.
