check the bullets SD if your shooting a lightr smaller caliber bullet to compare apples to apples use bullets with similar SD's, 2 calibers with poor choices f good bullets are the 257 and 277, I have shot bullets in 264 with an actual BC of .7, good 7mm bullets have a BC beyond .8, the 270 winny does not have the case capacity to utilize those bullets.
I shot a 270 for 20 years, and yes you were cherry picking, there is no way a 270 can outrun a 300 winny due to shear case capacity, cause at it as always been cubic inches makes horsepower

Ballistic Coefficient is more important than raw powder charge. Its efficiency and powder charge that gives good ballistics.

The take away is: These newer loadings for non-magnum calibers has greatly bridged the gap and in some cases equals the gap to the larger magnum calibers with CXP2 size game bullets. That's great progress for traditional calibers. IMO[/B][/QUOTE]

Then go and use Hornadys ballistic catalogue and pick 270, 30-06, 300 win mag ammo you would consider "not" cherry picking. I want to see how your numbers stack up to the ones I picked.

By no means am I being sarcastic or belittling anyone's opinion. I just want to see commercially manufactured ammunition figures in print. The Hornady catalogue is a good benchmark. The old saying goes "figures don't lie" and such...

Hornady has a great selection and is more accurate with their numbers than others.

run your same numbers at 800 yards, check the results, BC makes the most affect from 700 yards and beyond. commercialy manufactured ammo sux at long range.
any good cartridge bullet combination can do surprisingly well, I've killed deer using holdover to beyond 600 yards, move out where the big kids play (800+) and BC is the biggie, the 270 isn't a good choice there

Yea I agree, after 500 yards you are into ranges beyond my comfort zone. I hunt the mountains of North Central Pa. The longest shot I ever had to take was a black bear I killed at 270 yards.

This guy did smack a goat pretty hard at 721 yards with the 270 using non Superformance Hornady 140 SST.
Its out there for sure:

Where is your location?? I never had enough scope on my guns and I sight my guns in so no hold over is ever required. A high quality 3x9 is all I ever used until now. I always wanted to get as close to the game I am hunting. I did just purchased a Leupold VX6 3-18 44mm CDS with fire dot to go on the JOC rifle. I get a free custom turret that should get me comfortably out to 600 yards with my load of choice. My hunting terrane still will only be 300-400 max on the power lines. The difference using a big scope like the VX 6 has me seeing my 300 yard targets like they were at 100 yards and the eye relief is ridiculously long. Might as well spend money on your guns right????
