Default Rust prevention.

This may sound paranoid but i have one of those 8 gun stack on gun safes and when i got it, it had just plain plastic rest to lean the guns on, for some reason i just had to put felt on it. So i bought felt that had adhesive on one side and put it on thinking nothing of it. Then i started thinking about it and i rubbed that felt on with my bare hands. Should i worry about oils from my hand getting in the felt and rusting my guns? Im really really narotic about my stuff (especially guns) and don' t want anything to happen. Any other suggestion on how to do this would be appriciated. Thanks-Sam

As long as you use a good rust preventative then you should be fine. I use and swear by BreakfreeCLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Preservative). It is an excellent all around gun care product. It has solvents for cleaning, if lubricates with light all-synthetic oil which evaporates leaving a dry Teflon lube which doesn' t attract dust and dirt, and is a great preservative. I' ve never had any gun rust that has had a light coat of CLP on the metal surfaces, even after handling. CLP was developed for and is use by our armed forces to clean and maintain their service weapons in the harshest envirionments on Earth. In fact, I discovered it while I was a Marine. To give you a clue as to its effectiveness as a rust preventer. The M16A2' s they issue in boot camp are cleaned so frequently and obsessively that on most, including mine, the parkerizing on the barrel from the compensator to the front sight assembly had been worn off to bare metal. But as long as the rifle had a light coat of CLP put on it after was handled it never had a speck of rust.

I trust all of my guns to CLP. It' s just really good stuff.

I built an oak gun cabinet many years ago (17 to be exact) and lined the rest with felt. My guns have reasted against this felt for the entire time and never have developed any signs of rust in doing so. I agree if you use a preventive agent or product after cleaning you shouldn' t have any problems with rust.

There shouldn' t be a problem using the felt. For added protection I use RIG on a sheep skin. I' ve used RIG for as long as I can remember and never had the slightest bit of rust.I know there are allot of modern lubricants that work well, but RIG has proven to me to be reliable in rust prevention.
