I built an oak gun cabinet many years ago (17 to be exact) and lined the rest with felt. My guns have reasted against this felt for the entire time and never have developed any signs of rust in doing so. I agree if you use a preventive agent or product after cleaning you shouldn' t have any problems with rust.
