ZREXPILOT..

I don't think anyone here was arguing what chambering/load is the BEST, for whitetails, but simply discussing thier favorite chambering and load..

I've killed deer with shotgun slugs, a variety of muzzleloader loads, and quite a few rifle/ bullet combos, plus several different broadheads, and I agree, that if you put an adequate projectile in a vital area, you will kill your deer..

Still, many of us still find it enjoyable to discuss our favortite guns and loads for our particular hunting situations..

Pygmy,

You're right.... And I skirted that when I posted a few posts back.

Here's a load grandfather-gunsmith cooked up for my first deer rifle, a 1903 Mannlicher-Schoenauer that he re-barrelled from a shot-out 6.5 X 54 MS to a 7 X 57 for me way back in 1967 when I was 14.

Winchester case (may not matter, but never altered this)
CCI large rifle primer
38 grains of IMR3031
160 grain .284 diameter Sierra Spitzer Boattail

Modest velocities for that rifle and 24" barrel (probably around 2500 fps, I doubt much more) and with the express iron sights and my young eyes it accounted for a few deer that were dispatched with aplomb, albeit at quite modest ranges of from 40 yards to 90 yards.

I still have the old Steyr and it still has the slickest bolt of any bolt rifle I've even owned or held.

arguing about calibers is like arguing between a bowtech or a mathews.
A piece of lead through the chest is a piece of lead through the chest.

ZREXPILOT.....

Check the title of the thread.....What's your favorite caliber/load for whitetail?

This was just some folks sharing what their pet caliber/load was. There hasn't been ANYONE arguing about anything. Nobody has turned this into a "my caliber is better than yours" thread.

So why in the world do you want to post something about arguing between a Mathews and a Bowtech????
That has absolutely nothing to do with this topic. Go find another thread to hyjack.

Good Lord dude......grow up.

True, Id say calling this thread an argument is an overstatement, but I think the point was that although its fun to read what everyone prefers to shoot deer w/, it really doesnt matter what the actual projectile is, thats ripping through the deers chest cavity, at the moment of truth, as long it makes a decent hole. Ive often said to myself, while on stand, that I would gladly trade my pretty rifle, chambered in my favorite wizzbang caliber, for an old thurty-thurty that actually had a big buck in its sights.

Timely classic
My dream hunt would be horse back in the mountains for elk, wit a turdy turdy saddle gun, open sight of course.

Whatever I happen to be carrying any particular day. Could be a 7-08, a 270, a 300 salvage, a 30-06, a 50 cal, a 54 cal,x weave 300...etc..

30-06 with 150 grain winchester power points.

Why? because it's absolutely impossible to kill a deer with anything else and anyone who says otherwise is either lying or insane. And probably a spy or Al-qaeda operative. And has a crush on Nancy Pelosi.

No, the real reason is because I only own a 30-06 and the first box of ammo I bought happened to be that particular round and they grouped at an inch. Good enough for me and good enough for the deer.
