James is right, the 270-300WSM are already showing up in the top 25 die sales nationwide, thats hardly fading out, they will both be around for a long time.I can buy 300WSM ammo(winchester 180 pp) for 18.99@ box at my local Wally World and they are factory loading nosler ballistic tips, power points, fail safes, speer grand slams, trophy bonded bear claws, and nosler paritions in winchester and federal factory loads. There are also eight gun makers chambering for the winchester short mags now.I' m seeing them up here in the boonies in pretty much every gun shop on the shelf, and don' t know anyone that goes hunting and buys their ammo in another country when they get there, barring a mishap of some kind.I guess it would be hard to find any caliber other than a half a dozen of the most popular US cartridges in some distant land, and most don' t choose their rifle caliber with that in mind, else it would be a boring set-up indeed with everyone shooting just a few of the popular, easy to find ammo for calibers. The short mags wern' t designed to " outpreform" the existing long action cartridges only offer short action rifle alternative calibers. You hear so much that they won' t better whats already out there but they never were intended to, instead they compare to whats out there in a shorter, lighter, more rigid, slightly faster cycling rifle.I would suggest the Savage weather warrior stainless rifle in 300WSM,reasonable priced($475)light weight(6 3/4 #)and very accurate out of the box(mine shoots 1" ).Custom rifles and african hunts are great, don' t get me wrong, would like both if I could afford them, but they probably apply to a smaller % of the average posters on most of these hunting forums.Get the Browning or Savage in 300WSM and you will like it.And by the way, they also kick just like their longer action counterparts

I think remington guns work good. You might be able to find a gun at www.remington.com.:)

You know what we need to go with the short mags? Five or six cartridges that fit between the .308 and the 3006, wow. more redundant choices. Well I must say that trying somthing new is fun, however lets not be swayed by sales bull defication. The reason reloading die sales are so high is lack of ammo availability and brass, try ordering some .223 W.S.M. brass. You aint going to find it for about 6 mo!

Its true that it may be a while before components are available. Factory ammo is not hard to get where I live. I could however live with the 22-250, 6.5x55 and my 45-70. I have both the 250-3000 and the 6.5x55 in the 700 classics. I just picked up the same gun in 300 Savage as that was the classic for this year. I never had a problem with a 700 Remmington and I have had a bunch of them.

Beg to differ with ya Judson, ammo is readily available for the standard short mags most places here in rural Maine and thats not why die sales are hot(I' ve had two shops tell me they still can' t keep 270-300WSM' s on the shelf as they are selling very well). As far as being redundant the 300WSM far outperforms the 308 and the 30-06 is a long action cartridge(so it doesn' t apply to a shooter like myself that perfers to use short action calibers and rifles).I' ve seen no reason not to buy another WSM since owning one, and will get a 270WSM shortly also. All this talk of hype isn' t slowing the winchester short magnum sales at all and they still have more calibers to go in the pipeline. The super shorts may be a bit longer getting ammo available as they were introduced in Feb. of this year so they are rather new. They are popular enough to have their own forum, and Wal Mart selling ammo and rifles chambered for them already.Different strokes for different folks,I didn' t bad mouth your odd choice of caliber so no need to badmouth someone elses choices either.

Good points about the new short kids on the block, true they beat the 6006 but so does the 300 Win mag, the .308 Norma, .300 Weatherby, and the .30/.378. My point is not why would you want one, but weather it is the best choice for the present. Are these cartridges redundant YES!!! Then again so are alot of others. Cartridge selection is a personal choice and it is not weather one cartridge is slightly " better" then the other it is what do YOU WANT! I voice my opinion from a Gunsmithing perspective, alot of what goes into my decision does not effect the average shooter, hunter. For Example, I bash the Browning A Bolt in some ways. Is it a pritty rifle? Yes. Is it accurate? Yes. Is the trigger good? Fair other rifles can give a lot better pull with a little work. Does the Browning have a smooth action? Yes, one of the smoothest going, but I dislike the weak camming of the short bolt lift.
Will this concesion to modern production trends last for thousands and thousands of rounds? No! Most of us will never fire that many rounds from one gun in their life but in my line of work it does concern me.
As a Custom Rifle Builder I have some rather strong opinions about guns, I am not saying your opinions are wrong they are not! A persons opinion, like cartridge choice is a personal thing and based on information and knowledge. AND NO I WOULD NEVER GET A SHORT MAGNUM!!!!! BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD NOT!!!! To each their own. Ya this is sort of an apoligy, I do not mean to hurt feelings or step on toes but I will say what I think based on my experiance.
P.S. Yes I do have rather strange choices in calliber.

After all, it is not what you kill game with that is important, it is how you hunt that matters.
