Gun for me!

Squirrel and coons? Yeah probably overkill. Plus you really, really dont want to send a 223 round up in the air. You shouldn't do it with a 22lr either, but you could still use a branch as a backstop with a 22.
I was assuming you already had a 22lr? If not, everyone needs a 22.Don't get cute with the caliber, get a plain old 22 first, then if you want another rimfire you can consider something different.

Yes! The proper order is to get a 22lr FIRST! Then a shotgun, and next a good deer rifle(if legal in your state). Only afteryouhave these guns can we have discussions about which calibersare best to fill the gaps in between. I have nearly a half dozen 22's, lever actions, a semi auto, and bolt actions, with no duplicates in any other caliber(oh crap,12 gauge doesn't count does it
?). Everyone needs a 22! You can shoot tin cans all freakin day for $20 bucks. Nothing else will make you abetter shot as quick.
What do you have in gun cabinet now? If you a have a deer rifle you can use it for yotes, and the 22lr works for anything smaller.

Well here in Ohio We can only use Shotguns and Muzzeloaders. Well I live at home so I have a 20 gauge Mossberg shotgun for deer/turkey/dove. My dad has a .410 mossberg, 12 gauge ithica, and a .22 mag henry.thanks for the advice HD.

You could use a 223(or 204, or 22-250, or 243, a different discussion)for yotes since yall cant use deer rifles, but I'd have to get a 22 first. That stinks about no deer rifles, I hope your law makers come around on that one.
That henry is sweet isnt it?
If you have a shotgun, next move should be a 22lr IMO. No need to rush into a centerfire, especially if you cant use it on deer. The 17hmr, 17mach2, and 22mag are fun, but they are niche rounds that dont really fill a void.

Absolutely everyone should have a .22 lr. Ammo is cheap (50 rounds of Winchester Super X is less than $2.50, and 500 round bricks of promotional loads are less than $20) and excellent high velocity and target grade ammo is available. I do not know any good shooters that did not spend many hours and many thousands of rounds with a .22 lr.
Noise is low, there is no recoil, and it is plenty accurate enough to shoot a groundhog between the eyes at 50 yards. The .22 lr is just plain fun.
