Default question about .280 remington pump

What do you think about a remington .280?
Will it work for hogs and deer and what load?

sr.corndog....

i had three rem 7600' s all synthetics stocks. one of them was in the 280rem.they are great " work horse " guns and have taken them through the rain and muck in the maine swamps with no problems with them. the only thing i really did not like about the rem 7600' s was that when i had to steady my shots or aim. i had to hold right under where the magazine is. due to my arm length.
i was only getting anywhere from 1.3/4 to 2" groups with those guns using factory ammo.
i don' t know how tough the wild pigs are due to never hunting them but if you reload you have a better selection of ammo that way. i have used the 140gr failsafes 140gr. and 160gr. rem core lokt' s. i roughly paid about $18.00 for a box of ammo around my area. hope this helps. i think the 140gr. is a good bullet for deer sized game. i also here alot of people talking about the 139gr. from hornaday.

i forgot. the trigger is awfull. i tried to get a timnet trigger for it but i could not get one for them. gotta deal with it set about 4# to 4.5#

W.D.M. Bell, a Scotsman hunting for ivory in the early part of the 20th Century in Africa, killed over 800 elephants with a 7X57mmm Mauser, most with one shot each!! Your .280 is more powerful than his 7X57mm was, and it shoots the same diameter bullets.

If you check in the Firearm Review Forum, under Rem.BDL SS280,you can check out some groups shot at 200 yds with Rem 280.One group really stands out but plan on doing a lot more testing, soon as I am able.I had a heart atack on the 5th and not going to be able to shoot for a little while(hope its just a little while).
My 280 is a bolt action, not a pump, but I do have a Rem in 742,in 30/06 and it is no slouch at hitting the middle of the bull, compared to a bolt.So the pump should with todays powders and bullets be close to the bolts in hunting guns.
Think you picked a good cal and rifle for deer or hogs.

The Remington pump is accurate and dependable. Sometimes you have to get a small base die set but thats the only problem I ever had with several that I have owned. One, a 270 would shoot 1 inch groups at 200 yards with Nosler Balistic tips. When you stop and think about it, they have a rotary locking bolt and a free floated barrel.
