Careful now.....
Those of us who've heard it so often our ears bleed commonly refer to it as "S-P-O-R-T-S".
And no,having beena member of the largest body of AR users in the world for just over 23 years, I don't think I ever heard the term "assault" and "rifle" used together. "Assault" was what you did. A "rifle" was just one of the tools you did it with (along with things like GPMGs, CAS, FA, etc.). "Defense" was the opposite of "assault" and something else we did, but you never hear anyonecombine the words"defense" and "rifle" together the way we do "assault rifle", do you?Hmmmm...... Maybe if we did, the antis wouldn't be so afraid of them?
Otherwise, unless you're a ClassIII holder (have fun getting one), you're not going to have selective fire legally, therefore your common off-the-rack AR-clone is nothing more than a semi-auto sporting arm manufactured to closely resemble a military weapon. And from there, I'll refer you back to RR's accurate post.
edit: Tim - you're really saying that "all guns are made to kill people"?! Huh?

This post don't really interest me too much but I will say that a lot of your most popular cartridges were first military rounds. Some guns as well as calibers were designed for one thing as later used for something else. In this case, military use turned into hunting or sport shooting.. It's all interpretation but most of you guys with AR's or AK's or M1's, 30.06, .308 or .223 have never assulted anyone with them.. So Imo they are what they are used for.. In my case varmint guns.. And sure you have to keep an AR clean but personally I keep all my guns clean..

Homer, the article is on correcting malfunction, not just immediate action (SPORTS, which happens to be in the article, that you didn't read before you commented on it.) but remedial action also.
And on the whole "Assault rifle" being taboo subject... I don't really care what you call it. I don't care whatthe law calls it.I don't care if you paint yours pink and spray perfume on it, so its not so dangerous. The fact still remains that this thread, that I created, with the phrase "assault rifle" in it, WILL NOT AFFECT LAW MAKING DECISIONS DEALING WITH AR RIFLES. So stop overreacting.

i really have no problem using the term assault weapon i do normally when i want someone to understand what i mean when i talk about a ar15. most non gun owners have no idea what they are.
As for them being made to kill people. i still have never seen a gun not made to kill people.
And yes both times i bought my ars. i bought them because i wanted a semi auto rifle that i knew would be far Superior to any gun someone had i got into a shoot out with.
YES I BOUGHT A GUN TO KILL SOMEONE IF THE NEED AROSE

Can't we all just get along?
Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Firearms are just one of many tools that are used. No different than a hammer, a baseball bat or a car for that matter.
