No where near ...... It is actually one of the most prolific cartridges made. In fact, I recently bought another .308 to add to my collection. It is an incredible round. Good shooting.

Definitely not dead and will be around for a long time. I'm getting ready to order a .308 any daybut am justhaving trouble deciding on what rifle I want itin. I want a wood stock and not too expensive. Not too heavy and not too light as I plan to hunt with it as well as punch paper. Just so many choices it is hard to decide. Weatherby, Tikka, CZ, X-bolt, A-bolt, Savage Classic, 798,ahhhhh!!!

RE: Is the .308 Dead?
"Dead or alive?" It is more likely that the new fangled short magnums will go the way of the dinosaurs than that the tried and true cartridges will be supplanted by the short magnums. In my opinion, the .30-06, .270, .25-06, .308, .243, .300 Win Mag, etc., will be around long after the short magnums, the super short magnums, and even the super-duper short magnums have left the scene. In my opinion the whole purpose of the short magnums was to gull shooters into buying new rifles that they didn't really need. I mean give me a break, 95% of shooters can't hit the vitals of a typical big game animal at 300 yards. What possible advantage do the short magnums have over the traditional cartridges at under 300 yards? Accuracy? The cited traditional cartridges aren't accurate enough? I don't buy it. The only need satisfied by the short magnum craze was boosting flagging firearms sales. Not that I hold this against the firearms manufacturers, I just think it is silly to allow oneself to be brainwashed by the marketing hype.

The 308 is not at all dead. There are so many out there the problem is all these young bucks who don't know anything but think they are God's gift to the hunting world. They think that their dad's 30-30 and 308 can't kill anything anymore but they forget that their dad always had meat on the table. I guess they think PETA is handing out kevlar vest to deer now or something.
The 308 is accurate out to 800+ yards and can drop a deer in any realistic hunting situation.

I must admit I haven't shot a .308 since the Canadian military went to the 5.56.

Thanks fella's. Your thoughts echo mine. I just wanted to confirm I wasn't out in left field on this.
B&A I knew about the 7.62 / .308 thing. Thanks
It looks like there might be a new piece of iron to keep my other BLR company.

RE: Is the .308 Dead?
To quote one writter "the 308 Win is the best White Tail cartridge" I would also sayin general its the best first gunthat any huntercould start with, and to build a hunting rifle collection from. Like 308win, 270win, 338-06 etc... A short 20" barreled bolt for al most any thing from 0-300 yards. Than a good flat deer/caribou/antalope gun, and then a good elk/moose gun. Throw in a short lever gun in 30-30/35rem and may be a 277/284/308MAG and Wa La.
