RE: Is the .308 Dead?
"Dead or alive?" It is more likely that the new fangled short magnums will go the way of the dinosaurs than that the tried and true cartridges will be supplanted by the short magnums. In my opinion, the .30-06, .270, .25-06, .308, .243, .300 Win Mag, etc., will be around long after the short magnums, the super short magnums, and even the super-duper short magnums have left the scene. In my opinion the whole purpose of the short magnums was to gull shooters into buying new rifles that they didn't really need. I mean give me a break, 95% of shooters can't hit the vitals of a typical big game animal at 300 yards. What possible advantage do the short magnums have over the traditional cartridges at under 300 yards? Accuracy? The cited traditional cartridges aren't accurate enough? I don't buy it. The only need satisfied by the short magnum craze was boosting flagging firearms sales. Not that I hold this against the firearms manufacturers, I just think it is silly to allow oneself to be brainwashed by the marketing hype.
