just i little heads up the canadian millitary never used a 308, they used the 7.62 nato, which is really the same bullet but if you were to use a 7.62 out of a 308 your gun would blow because the 7.62 was loaded for much more pressure, the 308 will never die, it started the short mag craze when it almost matched the 30-06 for power but in a smaller rifle, which is the idea of using a mini mag, lots of people wanted a 300 mag but in a smaller package

No where near ...... It is actually one of the most prolific cartridges made. In fact, I recently bought another .308 to add to my collection. It is an incredible round. Good shooting.

The 308 is not dead.. And don't see it going anywhere. Just look at its offspring.. The 243 and 7mm08, the 260 and the 338 Federal. They continue to bring out new uses of this cartridge because of its poplarity lower recoil and increased accuracy.

I have watched many thousands of rounds of military ball ammo clearly marked 7.62 x 51 shot from just about every concievable .308 action type there is. Not one 'blow up'. The pressure difference is more a method to control pressure and pressure spikefor auto fire and semi auto fire guns.

I would be willing to bet the .308 and 30-06 are still the two most popular rounds and rifles sold, next to the .22 rimfire.
Sort of reminds me of the 17HMR and 17HM2, great little rounds but they will never replace the .22 rimfire.
Me personally after looking at the ballistics of most of the Short Mag cartridges they don't offer much. There is no real huge advantage to using them over the standard load and in most cases you would be better off just moving up to the next more powerful standard cartridge. Most of the ones I have looked at only give you a few hundred more FPS with the same weight bullet. Not hardly worth the hassle or expense in my opinion.
The .308 will probably kill just about any critter in the U.S/Canada and if don't think that is enough step up to the 30-06. You will never have trouble finding a gun chambered in them or finding ammo at any store that sells ammunition.
My opinion anyway.

Going over this 7.62 verses 308 it's my understanding that the 308 is loaded to higher pressures and therefor might not be safe in some of the older 7.62 guns (ie 96 mausers that have been rebarreled to 7.62 specs) but I've never heard it the other way around. OH is the 308 dead, nope not even close to it's golden years yet, I've got 3, and am putting another one together, heck Wal Mart even stocks rounds for it,
