I would opt for a 30 30 in a Marlin for the little fellow, especially if shots are going to be close. My second choice would be the 25 06. Lots of reach, with minimal recoil. I bought my son a win model 70 compact in 243 when he was 10-- what a great round. he's taken4 deer since then, plus a pronghorn and 150ib boar w it.95 or 100 grains. this year he's stepping up to the 06, we're headed for wyoming for elk, mulies-- no room for the243 there... good luck.

Savagearms dotcomhas a few .243's with non-removable muzzlebreaks. they claim it reduces the felt recoil by 30%. I'd also invest in a good recoil pad (Limbsaver is one of my favorites)
and I agree with "liquidorange" noise scares kids. when I was younger I remember hating how loud guns were.(dad's 12ga. comes to mind.) However, I wasn't wearing hearing protection while in the field.
