If they made one caliber that you could "do" everything with, what a boring world this would be.

That would mean all of us would only own one gun ~ WHAT !!!

All Around Hunting Calibers;

I like one for each "type" (or quary) of hunting I do.

Small, medium, large and extra large (and one of course for thick cover).

Dont listen to the guy at the rifle shop, hes probably got some short mag thats been sitting in the shop for quite some time that he is trying to off to someone that doesnt know any better. The 30-06 is a great caliber, probably one of the best, if not the best all arround caliber ever produced, capiable of killing anything in North America with the proper bullet and good shot placement. Also you can find 30-06 ammo no matter what part of the U.S. you are in.

No question, I wouldnt ever give up my 30-06 savage. the versality of this cartridge and the accuracy of the Savage are as a good as anything I've ever owned.

Of course it depends on what type of range you are looking to shoot. Yes a 30-06 is a great cartridge up to about 250 yards. If you are like me and have a lease that you get 400+ yards all the time then no you dont want a 30-06. And as far as the "short mag" quote I own almost every popular deer caliber from a 243 to a 338. My favorite would have to be the 325 WSM for all around game, Whitetail to Moose. The only downfall is the availability and price of the ammo, but when you own a firearm retail store then its pretty easy to obtain. . I also love the 300 WSM. But heck I have killed plenty of deer with a .223, so its all personal preference I think.

If I could only keep 1 gun it would definately be my Browning X Bolt Special Hunter in the 325 WSM. The weight of this gun is perfect, the trigger is superb, and this type of accurace from a 220 grain bullet is unheard of!!

How do you figure a 30-06 is only good for about 250 yards? If you look at the ballistics charts for a 30-06 shooting FACTORY Federal ammunition with a 180gr. Nos and a 200 yard zero, it drops 42.2" at 500 yards and has 1570 ftlbs of energy. Now compare that to the 325WSM that you like so much, useing a 180gr. bullet also, with a 200 yard zero, it drops 38" and has 1696 ftlbs of energy at 500 yards. That is a whole 4" of difference and about 120 ftlbs of difference at 500 yards, that is less than the size of a beer can of drop distance at 500 yards.The best factory load for the 300WSM with a 180gr. bullet shows that it drops 37.2" at 500 yards, it is less than a inch flatter than the 325WSM at 500 yards, which still isnt enough of a difference to even notice at 500 yards, most people cannot shoot a 4-5" group at 500 yards with a benchrest, and perfect conditions with a hunting rifle. Now look at the difference at 400 yards, the range at which you claim to hunt, the difference is truely minimul, the 325WSM drops 18.7" with a 180gr. bullet compared to the 30-06 shooting a 180gr. bullet, it drops a whole 21", a difference of 2.3" at 400 yards. Your 300WSM at 400 yards shooting a 180gr. bullet drops 18.5", still less than 2.5" difference at the 400 yards that you are shooting. No animal will know the difference. So once you have studied the charts and know the facts, neither the 325WSM or the 300WSM are anymore effective at long range than the good ole 30-06.

My favorite is the 7x57 Mauser but that's not on the menu so I guess it will be my Winchester 30-30. It has killed its share of deer and its fun to shoot

It was a difficult choice, as I have so many I love...but at the end of the day, probably my Remington 700 BDL LH in .270...it was a very close call between this rifle and my old Savage 99 in .308 and my Tikka T-3 Stainless Lite in 270 WSM...and and the Browning A-Bold in 25 WSSM...oh wait....oh I give up and hope I never have to cross this bridge! Final answer...1 rifle? The Remington 700 in .270 Win it is.
