How do you figure a 30-06 is only good for about 250 yards? If you look at the ballistics charts for a 30-06 shooting FACTORY Federal ammunition with a 180gr. Nos and a 200 yard zero, it drops 42.2" at 500 yards and has 1570 ftlbs of energy. Now compare that to the 325WSM that you like so much, useing a 180gr. bullet also, with a 200 yard zero, it drops 38" and has 1696 ftlbs of energy at 500 yards. That is a whole 4" of difference and about 120 ftlbs of difference at 500 yards, that is less than the size of a beer can of drop distance at 500 yards. The best factory load for the 300WSM with a 180gr. bullet shows that it drops 37.2" at 500 yards, it is less than a inch flatter than the 325WSM at 500 yards, which still isnt enough of a difference to even notice at 500 yards, most people cannot shoot a 4-5" group at 500 yards with a benchrest, and perfect conditions with a hunting rifle. Now look at the difference at 400 yards, the range at which you claim to hunt, the difference is truely minimul, the 325WSM drops 18.7" with a 180gr. bullet compared to the 30-06 shooting a 180gr. bullet, it drops a whole 21", a difference of 2.3" at 400 yards. Your 300WSM at 400 yards shooting a 180gr. bullet drops 18.5", still less than 2.5" difference at the 400 yards that you are shooting. No animal will know the difference. So once you have studied the charts and know the facts, neither the 325WSM or the 300WSM are anymore effective at long range than the good ole 30-06.
