Smith & Wesson SW1911?

I have no doubt that the S&W 1911 is a fine gun BUT if I were laying out that kind of money, I would get the Kimber. Probably the best non custom 1911 out there. My dad had me a 1911 built while i was in the service. I don't know how much they go for in the real world but if you shop around you can find a Kimber Custom ll for around 700.00

I am not sure why they dropped the 745. I had one of the 745 IPSC's. It was truly a work of art. It would shot with any of the 45's out there. But as stated above, they were expensive. Tom.

I think the price is way out of line. There are several makes that will do anything the Smith will do for a LOT less money. I just bought the Taurus PT-1911 as have several others. Out of the box performance and reliability is fantastic...at half the price of a Smith and with Lifetime Warranty. What's not to love?

NYH, I paid $569 for mine at Academy Sports. They are, I believe, a national chain of sporting goods stores and hopefully one near you. The PT-1911 comes from the factory with every customized and factory tuned option you can get on a 1911. At least do yourself the favor of going and looking at one. I think you'll see they blow the S&W away and I bet will outshoot it to boot. I'm not good enough to do it off hand but from the bench I can shoot clipful after clipful into one gaping hole. Look at the gun and then decide.
Go to the Taurus website and check out their factory and see who Taurus really is. Trust me, they are not just a bunch of Brazilians sitting under a tree with a hammer and a file trying to make pistols. They have one of the most high tech arms factories there are. Each 1911 is handfitted and the parts serialized. Look at the gun. Don't take my word for it.

Plus 10 on the Kimber . while the custom II is a exceptional weapon. If you are going to spend a grand anyway you can get an Eclipse. They are a great gun and great looking also.

I've narrowed it down totheSmith & Wesson SW1911 orKimber Custom Stainless II. Smith & Wesson giving $100 rebate makes it about $100 less then the Kimber. I also like Smith & Wesson's customer service. I'm not knocking the Taurus at all and I'm glad you're happy with yours. I'd just rather have a Smith or Kimber. Now if I could get a Taurus for half of what the SW1911 costs ($326), I might have gotten one in addition to the Smith or Kimber. [/align]
