Default .45 ACP and .45 Auto same thing?

I was wondering, are the .45 ACP and the .45 Auto the same cartridge? Or are they simply compatible, with negligible differences, as in the case of the .308 Winchester and the 7.62x51?

I was just wondering in case I were to have one of these pistols in the future, I didn't want to blow it up, you know, and risk personal injury.

Thanks,

Josiah

45 ACP stands for 45 Automatic Colt Pistol. They are one and the same. 45 Auto is just short for that and usually it's just discussed at "the 45." Most people automatically assume you mean the 45 auto.

.45 ACP = .45 "Automatic Colt Pistol" = .45 Auto. Yes, they are the same round......

As others have said, 45 auto and 45 acp are in fact the same, but for some that dont know " just for some info" there is also a 45 auto rim cartridge which cant be fired in a 45acp pistol, made for the model 1917 revolver produced by Colt and Smith&Wesson durring WW I. It has a full rim to be used with half moon clips for ease of loading and unloading, the revolver can fire the 45acp round in it though without the half moon clips. Just a tid-bit of info!.

Well, they used to be the same. Now Glock has come out with the .45 GAP(Glock Automatic Pistol). So now you have it and the .45 ACP, both are .45 auto.

Umm big tiny the GAP is a shorter cartridge and not interchangeable with the 45 acp . There are also 2 45mags 1 is longer and 1 is a high pressure round I could look them up 1 is a win mag .

I never said they were interchangeable, just that they are both .45 autos. So, if I find a .45 auto slug in a body on a crime scene, I don't automatically assume it's .45 ACP.
