I was wondering, are the .45 ACP and the .45 Auto the same cartridge? Or are they simply compatible, with negligible differences, as in the case of the .308 Winchester and the 7.62x51?

I was just wondering in case I were to have one of these pistols in the future, I didn't want to blow it up, you know, and risk personal injury.

.45 ACP = .45 "Automatic Colt Pistol" = .45 Auto. Yes, they are the same round......
