Out of curiosity, if my shots were at 400 yards, what caliber wouldyou choose between the two?
I'd say that unless you'd been practicing at 400 yards, and consistently hitting a heart/lung sized group at that distance... then you ought to just get a little closer, and give up the quarter-mile stuff.

Here's one set of info:

http://www.remington.com/products/ammunition/ballistics/comparative_ballistics_results.aspx?data=R270W2*R3 08W1

The .270's got the velocity & "energy" edge at all distances. The .308 has the "frontal area" edge.

The difference isn't huge, but the .270 wins by a neck.

Still... flip a coin!

I'd go with 7mm08 or 280.

I'm a big fan of the 30 cal bullets. My choice would be 308.

At 400 yards, I'd say I've got about 100 yards of stalking left to do. 200 yard zero with about 8" drop at 300 yards (130 core-loks). No a big fan of holding "outside the hair". But I've never shot anything over 100, so it don't matter much....
