RWS/Dynamit Noble would be my first choice. 177 cal is very popular locally for rabbits and tree rats. By the way, a co-worker was recently hospitalized and in cardiac ICU when accidentally shot by one of these rigs. She is ok and back to work now, but... safety first! These things do some damage.

A Red Ryder will definately NOT be the way to go. It is just a BB gun, not a even a pellet gun.
.22 pellet gun is the way to go. I have a pretty old Pleasure KS-1 .22 air rifle. Single break action cocking mechanism with a rifled barrel and rifled sight. I was told the Chinese army used them to teach marksmanship to new soldiers before giving them actual firearms.
It's pretty accurate but doesn't have more than I would guess 400-500 fps. But it does in rabbits easily and takes the squirrels right off their feet. It hits hard.
Think I paid 5 or 10 bucks for it years ago.

When I was in Austrailia I used to pic up a magazinr called "Guns and Game" I read one article about a fellow who was hunting rabbits with a pellet gun (forget what make) and a fox came along and he head shot the fox and killed it.
