Default Slugs for Mossberg 500

I'm dragging my Mossberg 500 out of retirement just for grins this deer season. In the past I shot Winchester foster slugs through it with great groups. It has a cantilever rifled barrel. I put a new Nikon Pro Staff on it a couple of weeks ago and shot some Remington sluggers through it and it threw them everywhere. Before anyone tells me I shouldn't shoot foster slugs through a rifled barrel I've done this for years. Just a lot of lead to clean out of the barrel. So I'm going to pick up some sabots and try them out. I'd like to hear if you have a Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel which sabots you using. Thanks

Ballistic Research Institute did all oftheir testing back in the 60's with the Moss 500. I bought and shotBRI's before Winchester bought them out in the 70's.

I use Hornady SST`s. I`ve, also used Winchester Partition Golds. Both shoot really well.I haven`t taken a deer with the Hornadys, yet. But, I have with the Winchester`s. They performed very well. Last year I paid $9 for the Hornady`s and the Winchester`s were $11.

Rifled barrel, then don't use forster type slugs, only use sabot slugs. The Lightfields will always work, you may also want to try the Buckhammers. The rifeling is 1 in 36", so the 2 mention slugs will work best

I am currently shooting Lightfield hybreds 2 3/4. I am happy with them but they are just too dang expensive. $20.00 a box at basspro. Im going to check out some of the others as well. The hornady's sound great at $9

I agree, they worked great in my Mossberg 500, they are expensive but what slugs aren't anymore these days.

cant hurt to try the cheap stuff. those winchesters shot great out of my rifled mossberg. less than 3$ a box on sale. after that i like the new sst hornadys and the barnes federal slugs. ythe brennekes are supposed to be good too for cheap.

We had great results shootingthe 2-3/4" Remington BuckHammers thru the same set up. Those Remingtons are a heavy chunk of lead.

I don't shoot sabots out of my H&R USH either. Lots of scrub-a-dub but those 3-inch Brenneke Gold Mags are devasting in both accuracy and knockdown.
