Either will do. I have a .270win. Only rifle i've ever owned. I was thinking about buying a .308...but bought a new bow instead.

The only thing I am sittin' here wondering is why there are so many "under 200 yard" comments???!?!?!?!?!

Both of these rounds aremore than capible of taking shots beyond 200yds. Why do you think the military and law enforcement uses the .308 so much?

I currently use a Browning A bolt .270and I am thinking about switching to a Ruger M77 .308but I have never had any experiece with a .308. Has anyone had experiece with both? Which if eitheris better for deer, probably for shots under 200 yards?
I have this gun also(.270) and I would not trade it for anything else, I really like this rifle.

I think it's hard to say one is better then the other, as both are great. If you can't hit at 300 yards with a 308 then you can't do it with a 270. I love my 308 but know the 270's great also, so you really can't go wrong with either. One thing about the 308 is it can be found in a carbine with 18 or 20 inch barrels. If I already had a 270 and was going to get a 308, that's the way I'd go.

It's like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic and complaining that you don't have a window seat! Shoot a deer with a .270 or .308 at 200yards or less and the only place it is going is down.Mute point debating calibers.....Harold

ruger is far a better rifle then a new browning, that made in japan. i killed deer out to 300 yard with my remington 700 270 with 150 grain. so a 270 will do anything a 308 will do .

Both are good rounds.. just my preference is the .270. I have a Rem. 270, shooting 130 gr. nosler partitions. Pretty much drop anything in its tracks. Past 200 yards if needed.

I have killed a mountain of deer with 270 over the last 25 years, but I have recently bought a 308 to try this year. My primary caliber of choice is 30-30, and where I hunt, it is really all I "need".
