I absolutely love this thread. All of the different opinions AND EVERYONES TWO CENTS. I haven't posted on this forum in over a year but this one I had to.
I can shoot the biguns with accuracy however they do require a different skill. I do have to hold the gun which causes hand torque. I do have to pull the trigger which causes torque. And my shoulder does try to out run the gun. With practice you can learn to shoot these guns. With the right equipment you can continue using your same old proactice.
Now if I shoot my pee shooters like the 22-250 I don't have to touch the gun. I don't have to torque anything just a slight pressure from my thumb and index finger.
I have two boomers one my 7MM STW with about 30 lbs of recoil and the .300 RUM with about 33 lbs. Both do not have a brake, or suprresors just a recoil pad and some good ole shoulder.

All i can tell you all is, i've hunted much of Canada, all of Alaska plus several of the lower 48 states. I've probably harvested more big game than many of you combined and i'm talking several brown bear, and moose on down.... I just don't need a big magnum to do it.... peroid!
I believe in stalking the animial to get close enough so i'm NOT shooting into the next county, and i also believe in picking the proper weight and construction of bullet for the intended job... I believe you just don't need a big magnum if you do that... At least i haven't!
I've dropped moose with my S&W 44 mag....sowhy wouldn't i beable to do the same thing with a properly loaded 30-06???
James is right, most folks just don't need a magnum, but of course if you want one, and can shoot one, go for it!

I also use a 338WIN mag and recoil is very managible if you shoot it, rather then look at it in a cabinet collecting DUST!!! That is about the only way to Master the recoil game of a heavier MAGNUM round...But if you are one of those people that are recoil shy maybe you should shoot something with a little less POWER...(30/06) or (308) and get use to them first...

GOOD reply... I am a magnum shooter also... But I guess I am whimpy because my MAG's are bull barelled and heavy. And not the manly 7Lbs norm gun weight with a lot of felt recoil to make me more of a man??? I don't have any problem with people using recoil pads or breaks on their guns because it will only make you more proficant at taking game; and like you said a better shot, because you aren't felling all the recoil and flinching... But remember if you put a break on your gun it will greatlly increase the noise that your firearm makes.

New member here and only been forum stalking for 2-3 hours now but i would like to chime in. Wouldnt it make sense to get the biggest baddest rifle your budget allows for until you become a dead ringer with placement and then drop down to the state minimums (slowly but surely) for bragging rights when you have gained ample experiance? Seems like the logical progression as far as my noob ass is concerned.

Interesting...not very smart, but intersting.
