RE: nikon buckmaster
I have a Buckmaster 3x9. I had to buy a scope quickly when my Leupold failed a day before I was leaving for a hunt. I paid $150 NIB and for the money I'm impressed. Much clearer than the Varx-II, I like the click adjustment rather than the friction, and it seems pretty rugged. I haven't had it that long and can't honestly comment on its reliability.
The only downfall I see is the eye relief. Much less than the Leupold. Not a problem on my 308 but I'd be careful on a harder recoiling rifle.

I have 4,buckmaster 3x9x40,1,4.5x14,1, monarch 4x12x40,and you cannot tell the difference,I like them all.If you can get the 4.5x14 for 239.00 you better jump on it.I gave 279.00 for mine.I would buy 2or 3 more if I could get them for 169.00.I checked my Mid south cat. but they didn't give any prices.Cabelas was 279.00
