Default bought the groundhog rig!!

well...i done and did it! i found a new remington 700 SPS Vamint in .22-250. i really like how it feels. they only show black on their website...mine has a OD green stock but its the same stock. trigger aint half bad either..well...i guess im used to pulling a 30lb rough old mauser trigger. its heavy..but crisp..

also came with a cheap cheap 4-12x40 scope. has the remington R on one of the caps...the box just says RIFLE SCOPE. i knew it wasnt anything great. the rings and bases are getting thrown out tomarrow. i went to make sure the bases were tight and the screws just spin!

the scope dont seem half bad...i mean it aint no leupold or anything...but its pretty clear...im going to see how it shoots with it..if its ok i might leave it on till i get the money for a better scope...if its true junk ill throw my 3-9x40 leupold vari-x II on it for the time being..i should be alright out to 400yds or so with the 9x...

also ordered a 13-23" harris bipod for it...perfect for sitting shots. i always shot from shooting sticks..figured it was time for a bipod...i prefer to sit up when groundhog hunting...sometimes its near impossible to shoot prone...

what grain bullets should i shoot with a 14" twist?? im guessing that means 1 in 14"...also...what bullets should shoot the best and make mush of the groundhogs???

thanx guys...i cant wait to put some rounds through it!! i dont know if i'll beable to find good rings and bases or if i'll have to order them..hope i can find them so i can be shooting saturday and hunting saturday evening!!

Great rig!
I would try 40 to 55 gr bullets. the 1in14 twist may even shoot 60gr bullets well.

Mauser...When you say the screws for the bases just spin...Are you talking about where they screw into the top of the receiver??? I hope not, it might mean they have to be drilled out and re-tapped for a larger screw....

My little brother (he's 48) picked up a 700 in 22-250 on a trade a few years back, his groups the Remington 55 grain Soft Point well...His daughter
(16 now) has killed several deer with this gun in the past few years, using the Federal Premium 60gr Nosler Partition, groups with this bullet run about 2 inches at 100 yards, but most of her shots have been within that range.

Let me know how that bipod works out for you. I got one several years ago and it never seemed to work as well as I thought it would. If I'm set up on uneven ground, recoil makes it want to kick right or left. Maybe some of you guys know the secret to using them.

I also use a Harris bipod...I bought the longer version, I think it goes to 27 inches...I use it for sitting beside peanut fields, and I sit on a low beach chair, also, I'm 6ft 5...It works fine....As far as recoil affecting, I haven't noticed, but...I shoot a .243 and our farms are in Eastern NC (flat land)...

thanx guys...i cant wait to shoot it!! im dying. going to break it down and clean it this evening and get the factory grease out...

i havent touched the bases yet, just the rings. the ring bolt holes are shot. i aint too upset over it...i knew they were cheesy like always and got the gun cheaper than mspr price...

bipod should be here monday...i'll be shooting and hunting saturday. i'll get paid friday and buy my rings and ammo saturday morning. if that scope dont shoot i'll take the 3-9x40 leupold off the mauser and throw it on for the time being...

when im buying bases, does it matter if i go with 1 piece or 2 piece bases?? i see i can get both. also...what height rings do i need for a 40mm objective lense??

thanx alot...i'll post some pics soon when the bipod comes...im dying to shoot it!

Id say anything 45-60gr should work pretty well. My 250 shoots 55gr sp's .42" at 100. Your bipod should work fine. Good hight for sitting, im 6'3 and works fine for me. ive got 2 piece bases on my 223's and my 250. all remingtons also. and for a 40mm you should beable to you mediums. id suggest the weaver steel rings
