Headooo1. Some of understood what you meant even without dragging out the Firearms of the World book.
Good Grief Doe Dumper, you sold a gun?
Savage also made a bolt action in 30-30. I believe it was the Model 340. Yes I had one one of those too. I think it came in 22 Hornet and 223 as well.

Thanks James.
Guys I am not trying to start a cartridge war here. I specifically left out cartridges, and just wanted to generalize about caliber's. It is very easy to show my errors on a line by line basis. I am just trying to get some of you to look at the whole picture.
I did not imply that a 30-30 or 30carbine is a better deer cartridge than a 243 Winchester. But in several of my categories, it is a better choice. Many people only hunt in the woods and like to shoot alot. If 100 yards is your outer limit, and you like to shoot alot(cheaper ammo). Then yes, I would say the 30-30 in a lever or 30 carbine in a semi. would be a better choice. My girl friend hunts with a 30 carbine. And believe me, inside of 100 yards she is deadly with it. And it does recoil less than the 243 Winchester. And yes the practice ammo is alot cheaper. If I am hunting in the woods with my 94 Winchester and a peep sight, I can dot your eyes out to 100 yards. And I guarantee you that rifle is a better choice for deer in the woods, over a bolt action 243 Winchester. Here is a picture of one of the good ones. This one was born in '57. Tom.

These are all calibers I own. Have owned. Have hunted with. Have shot deer and few elk. Have seen hundreds of animals shot with. IMO this is how they compare.
.243.257 .277 .284.308 .338 .458

10.Resale value 8 8 10 10 10 5 5
Total 67 63 80 81 94 59 57
This is just my personal opinion. This a comparison of caliber not cartridges. There may be other factors, but I think this is the top 10. IMO the 30 caliber is superior-due to these 10 factors. Tom.

Hey listen, all of this is just an attempt to detur me from the 7mm-08 as my next bolt action rifle into buying a .308 for my son instead. Since it's always about me and there is always a conspiracy involved I just thought you all should know! However, in the land of the free and the home of the brave, I am still leaning toward a 7mm-08 for my son's Elk slayer. Now give up the ghost! Can't we all just get a long? I mean, am I really worth all of this trouble?

At least his opinion is based on experience! I respect opinion based on practical vs paper theory, even thoughI may not agree with them.
We'll never all agree on such things, plain and simple. Many good choices for good reason, just isn't acookie cutter for hunters and their equipment preferences.

Another Rabid 7mm-08 fan here.
. I am a fan of the 308 case and most of the cartridges based on it. One casing for NA.
243 for varmints, 260 for deer and antelope, 7mm-08 for deer and mid range elk, 308 for about everything, 338 Federal for elk and moose. Ditto the 358 Win The two latter ones will do for bears as well.
