Between the 300 Win Mag and the 7mm STW?

Obviously a 30 cal vs a 7MM bullet, but what I mean is the ballistics for a 150 grain bullet are pretty close, so for guys like me that can't really afford to have a whole bunch of rifles, would I really benefit from buying a 7MMSTW if I already have a 300 Win mag????

I got both, and I say no. I shoot 160gr accubond at 3150fps thru the STW, and shoot 180gr BT thru the 300Win mag at 3050fps. The STW has a slight edge on bullistics and bullet drop but loses in energy, throat errosion, and bullet selectibility.

So I decided I needed both and very happy with my decision.

I know the for the 300 with 180gr BT, my SD=.271, BC=.507 and for my STW and 160gr, my SD=.283 and BC=.531. So the STW has a decent SD, and better Bullistic coef. And I am launching at well over 100fps faster.

Feeding that into my Infinitiy program, with a 250yard zero, 2.4" high at 100 yards, I get bullet POI of -3.3 at 300, -14.18" at 400, and -31.55" at 500 with the 300win and energy levels of 1854ft-lbs at 500 yards.

With a 160gr Accubond out of my 7mmSTW with with a 250yard zero, 2.15" high at 100 yards, I get bullet POI of -3" at 300, -13" at 400, and -28.85" at 500 with energys of 1834ft-lbs at 500 yards.

You never said what your going to use the 7mm for???

But, for general hunting i agree with BC. Both of those cartridges are too close in performance to buy one over the other based on performance on game...

I'd worry more about getting the proper brand and weight of bullet for what i was hunting than if it was a 30 or 7mm....

I can only think of one type of situation where the .300 Win. may have a bit of advantage. Maybe a BIG MEAN BEAR (lion, lepard etc.) at close range who needs a good "JOLT" from a big heavy slug.

Other than that there probably isn't a lot of difference in themajority of big game hunting situations.

And I forgot to say, I am doing this with a 24" barrel 300win against a 26" barrel STW.

I came across it when I was looking for a white tail deer cartridge.
I have a 300 Win Mag, and I've been loading my own 150 GR. Ballistic Tips for deer and I was wanting something a little smaller. Not really needing, but wanting.

Since you already have a 300wm and looking for a smaller deerrifle why not look atthe .257 cal. Be it a 2506, 2506AI or 257 wby a perfect suited deer sizedrifle and flat shooter to boot.

I agree with the others,the .300 is a great deer cartridge. But you arent changing too much with the stw. I was thinking about getting one but I have changed my mind. I am just working with my .300 to improve my reloads and my shooting skills. If you would try a 25-06 or 6.5x55 or a .257 roberts you would like there killing power on whitetail. With less recoil your shooting skills will improve and with the right reloads the 25-06 will double as a varmit rig.

I agree with the previous posts, if you are wanting something smaller, get the 25-06, or even the .243, they are both excellent deer cartridges, and can also be good for varmints, and, they will allow you to develop your shooting skills. I find it ironic, with a name like lovethebigguns, that you want to smaller, but, whatever.
