What kind of GUN should you get?
If you mainly hunt in the bush and shots at deer or moose are close and fast then get a pump (like rem. 7600) or lever action (Browning, or and older Win. 88 or Savage 99).
If you mainly hunt in open country (plains and mountains) get a good bolt action (Rem. win. there are so many good bolt guns out there.)or even a single shot (Ruger, T/C encore, etc.).
As for the cartridge you choose, there are so many good ones that can fill your need, I would not suggest any one. Some say "never go under gunned" and "there is no such thing as too much power". I think if you get an "adequet round" and practice till you are very good and very confident with it, you may be better off than if you get an "overly powerful" round you can't shoot well.
