Well, I was determined to get one of the last model 70's in 27 WSM and there just werent any left. But, I did review the 7mm WSM and decided that it would do. The funny thing is that on paper it doesnt seem to do anyhting the old 7mm rem mag didnt do. Just got it last night so I am looking forward to shooting it! Anyone shot one of these or had any experiences with them?

27 WSM? What's that? Did you mean 270 WSM?
I think the most popular calibers in the WSMs are the .270 WSM and the .300 WSM, but the others haven't really caught on, especially the WSSM cals, those haven't really caught on at all. The .223 WSSM, C'mon! What a joke that thing is! I'm sure a few people have a 7mm WSM on this website, just be patient, and I'm sure you'll get some answers.

ejpaul1,
I don't have any experience with the short mags, but I think you did all right. If I had to choose between the two, I would take the 7mm version over the .270 WSM every time. I like the 7mm caliber, because there is a wide variety of bullets available. As a handloader, you should be able to make that 7mm WSM do just about anything you want it to....long range deer/antelope hunting all the way up to moose/elk loads.
Enjoy the new rifle!

I have owned three of the 300 WSM"S. I like the WSM's for a couple of reasons. I like the shorter action. I think a shorter action is stronger, and obviously weighs less. I like the fact that the WSM's headspace on the shoulder, and not on the belt. I believe headspacing on the shoulder is inherently more accurate than headspacing on the belt. I prefer the 30 caliber over the 270 or 7mm. I like the bullet selection of the 30 caliber. I have owned alot of 270 and 7mm caliber rifles, I just do not feel that they have the versatility and choices that a 30 caliber can give. But then I am also a 30-06 lover, and I know that argument will get me in trouble. Tom.

Took another doe about 4;15 today. She was about 125 yrds give or take 10.Again one shot she hit the ground hard.Broad side shot and down at an angle from the treestand and she was in the bottom field. Both lungs exploded and the size of a quarter going in and a baseball comming out.I thought I would of flinched, but never thought about it when she came out in the opening.Alot better without the brake on it, and the point of aim was still on.I can still hear. Now I get to work on my buck. That's two for the 7mm swm.

To longrifle1000: Are you sure about the headspace on the 300 Win Mag. I thought for sure all the Wby's headspaced off the belt. And if you bumped down the shoulder on the Win Mag, then how would it headspace off the shoulder? The belt would stop it? I do not consider myself an expert. And I do not mind being corrected when wrong. But I can not understand how a belted cartridge could headspace off the shoulder? Bumping the shoulder could then cause case splitting, and excessive pressure if the gap is too large?
I do not mean this as an argument. And I hope we can keep the discussion civil. But please show me where I am wrong. I do like to learn new things. Tom.

It took many years for the 7MM to catch up to the 270 and 30 calibers. The 7MM was not popular with U.S. hunters just because of its MM title. The 7MM Rem mag was the first real exception and its no suprise to me that it worked the same way with the WSM. Many people here own the 270 and 300 WSM's but I don't perdonally know one person who owns the 7MM WSM. If it stay on the market, it may get its share someday.

By no means am I an expert on the matter, I have never loaded fora belted mag.I have owned a few, but always bought factory ammo for them. But this is what is says in my Speer reloading manual.
300 Win Mag
Handloading for the 300 Winchester is straight-forward. Like other belted cartridges, the shoulder-not the belt-should be used for headspace control.
338 Win Mag
Like other belted magnums, we recommend that you set your loading dies so the case headspaces on the shoulder, not the belt.
240 Weatherby Mag
The case has the same rim diameter as the 30-06 so rifles can be bulit on standard actions. The belt is strictly cosmetic. Best accuracy and case life is obtained when the case headspaces on the shoulder.
