I have owned three of the 300 WSM"S. I like the WSM's for a couple of reasons. I like the shorter action. I think a shorter action is stronger, and obviously weighs less. I like the fact that the WSM's headspace on the shoulder, and not on the belt. I believe headspacing on the shoulder is inherently more accurate than headspacing on the belt. I prefer the 30 caliber over the 270 or 7mm. I like the bullet selection of the 30 caliber. I have owned alot of 270 and 7mm caliber rifles, I just do not feel that they have the versatility and choices that a 30 caliber can give. But then I am also a 30-06 lover, and I know that argument will get me in trouble. Tom.
When loading a 300 Win Mag the shoulder, not the belt, should be used for headspace control. Which is the case for almost all belted magnums. The 300 H&H is the only one off the top of my head that uses the belt for headspacing. So that is really a moot point. However, I would prefer a beltless cartridge, and a shorter action.
