RE: 270 win VS. 270 WSM
I'm trying to decide the same thing. The 270wsm has more knock down power and a little more velocity but the loads are a little more pricier. I need something that I can shoot across a field about 400 yds with a lot of knock down power, so I think I might get a 270wsm.

Well, I have decided to o ahead with that 270 WSM, but no one carries the 400 dollar savage version. In fact you cant hardly find one at any price! EJ

Of course, those that fell for it, will swear by them.

RE: 270 win VS. 270 WSM
Its just a different casing for the round. Its a Short Magnum. Wider case causes more even powder burn and suppose to have better performace.
Very honestly I dont see how you can get a better whitetail round than any high powered rifle. A 243 is an excellent round for deer and is good enough to lay em to the floor in one shot. My 2 model 700s are a 243 BDL and a (non shot mag) 270win SPS Stainless...Both drop em. The 270 is my go to gun just due to the optics i have on it...My 243 with VXI i use as a loner gun to friends and i tinker with it. Lots of the people i have loaned it out to have shot doe with it and it did the job nicely with 100gr core lokt ammo.
With my 270I am currently 6 for 6 with in the past 2 years. It shoots a group about the size of a 50 cent piece with factory hornady 130gr SP ammo and I have shot out to almost 200 yrds with it. Ive never seen 3in exit holes and rarely have much meat damage unless I knock the front shoulder. Pull the trigger and watch em fall...Ive never had to look further than 30yrds on a deer with the 270win.
If i found a deal on a 270WSM i might buy it, but if i were looking to speed up a round or looking for a bullet to be a better long distance gun i would go 30 caliber...Maybe 300WSM...

RE: 270 win VS. 270 WSM
There is no difference loading the WSM over any other round. My ruger likes the 130 gr ballistic tips push by 63 gr of IMR 4350 (max load in the Nosler manual), while it is close to being a compressed load it isn't. depends on what powder you decide to use. Like has been stated I4350, H4831sc and RE19 are all excellent powders to use for the WSM's Remember your handloading to tailor the load to the gun. Many people get the best accuracy at just over standard 270 win velocities. If you already have a 270 than there would be no need to get a 270 WSM, unless of course if you want one.

My problem is that the 243 of mine ( an NEF ) sometimes wont eject shells making it unusable as a hunting rifle.

RE: 270 win VS. 270 WSM
i shoot a 270 winchester and out of the 24" barrel on my remington 700, i can shoot a 140 grain Hornady interlock boattaill at 2960fps. its a pretty smoking hot load. and i took it deer hunting this year and it dropped the deer in its tracks. I have thought about getting a 270 WSM but i cant justify getting one when my standard 270 performs like it does.
