270 win VS. 270 WSM
 

Allrighty then, I havent posted in a while and since such time have taken an antelope and 2 whitetail. My problem is that the 243 of mine ( an NEF ) sometimes wont eject shells making it unusable as a hunting rifle. I have used my 30-06 for all the hunting this year, but the lousy thing just rips a three inch hole through the animals destroying too much meat. I want a 270, but cant quite decide which flavor to get it in. It seems the WSM has the edge with over all performance, but reloading seems like it could be difficult since the shoulder angle is so extreme. As well, I think WSM loads are compressed. Please, brandish unabashed opinion on the matter. I dont need another rifle, I just want one. EJ

To me it's not a decision. The WSM offers a pretty substantial performance advantage. I don't see why it would be harder to reload than another cartridge if you're setup for it.

Just a thought, but what makes you think the 270 Win and the 270 WSM are going to be any different? Shot placement, bullet weight/construction, andvelocity all play a part in this.

I would suggest maybe trying a 180 gr bullet like an Barnes X , Nosler Partition or Accubond up high in the lungs on deer size game with your "lousy" 30-06.Slip one between the ribs and get a 1 1/2" exit hole, very little meat damage and a very dead deer..:D


If you just want another new rifle, then just get one, dont blame it on the olnaught n six.

The type of bullet is more the target as well as the diameter for me. I only use bonded bullets and hunt in wyoming and colorado. I found that even a few inches less drop makes a ton of diference when hunting the plains. That is why I am impressed by the 270 wsm. But, the 270 is still a viable option as well due to ts flat shootng nature.

I load for both the 270 and the 270 WSM. Its no problem loading for the WSM the loads are no more apt to be compressed that with the 270 Win. That part depends on which powders you choose. In most cases you will find that across the chronograph, there is only about 200 fps Max difference. The most accurate load in My WSM is the 130 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter which clocks at 3050 fps. I can get more velocity but then the accuracy drops off. I have not tried very many combinations in it so far. The WW Supreme 130 Grain Ballistic Silvertips closk at 3275 from the WSM. The 150 Grain WW Power Points clock at 3200 fps.

My choice would be the Remington SPS which comes in both calibers and the 270 Win has a 24 inch barrel. I honestly don't think that in the field, you would see much real difference in performance between the two. The 270 WSM would give you a little more velocity, the Winchester version would give you less recoil and just a very little less performance. Last fall I took nine mule deer with nine shots with the 270 useing 130 grain Federal Fusions with very little meat damage.

I have never shot a 270 short mag but I have shot the short seven magand it is similar in ballistics. I saw what it can do to wildgame. The 270 will do the same. Cheaper to shoot. The 270 is a very impressive non magnum round.

I have killed boatloads of deer with the vanilla version of the 270 and if you are looking to avoid meat damage....look elsewhere :DThe 130's are a traumatic event for the meat to say the least. A 270 Win is an awesome round and the wsm version looks to be just a little more of a great thing but as far as not damaging the meat...hehehehehe...yeah right.
