243 ammo question

Please let me know if I'm wrong but isnt the Winchester Supreme Silvertip just the regular Nosler BT with the black coating and a different color tip. The fragmentation of the bullet is the same as any other Nosler BT.

again, i have never seen any of this fragmentation that gets bandied about on the internet. i have shot them religiously for 7 years now. this is firsthand experience. i'll take that over internet "proof" any day.

The picture above does not implicate fragmentation. I possibly struck the bone and plowed it out!

Well, jorkep,
There is no argument here. I simply stated what I know as fact from personal experience, and you did the same. If the ballistic tips work for you , then that is great. Keep using them. My stating what I know to be true was in no way meant to try to get you to change your mind or shoot something else. We are all just relating our own experiences. Just as you call my experiences " internet proof" , The same could be said of your experiences as they relate to me. That is the great thing about these forums. We can all relate our experiences to each other, and use what works for us. And , if I recall correctly, I did state that the winchester ballistic silver tip might be the exception to what I have seen. Soooooo I guess there was never a problem at all. "Internet proof" or not.
Good hunting and God bless

Really? I have always found gamekings to be some of the softest most frangible lead tip bullets out there. The one's I shot deer with performed almost like a ballistic tip out of my 25-06. I almost never got an exit hole and internally it was like a grenade went off. For that reason I switched to Hornady interlocks which I think are just about as good as it gets for a standard lead tip bullet.
Ihaven't used a coreloc on a deer in a long while but back when I did they usually exited and killed deer pretty well. I must have killed a dump truck load of deer with them here in Alabama out of an old remington 30-06 between the ages of 18 and 24. Never had a problem that wasn't due to me making a bad shot. However I am now 41 so it's been a while since I have used one. I have "heard" (so take this with a grain of internet salt) that the ones being produced now have a thinner copper jacket and therefore are not as tough as the older ones. I cannot confirm that however.I have a friend who uses 120 grain corelocs in his 25-06. He killed 3 deer last year with them and did not report any problems to me.
I have personally never liked a ballistic tip of any kind. Too fragile. Most of the wounded and lost deer horror stories that I have been involved with over the past 7 years involved a ballistic tip, poor penetrationand no blood trail. I guess it's the bowhunter in me but I like an exit hole.
and gamekings always exited.

You wont here me say that core locks wont work, just that it seems they exited the least. I wonder if distance has anything to do with it. Maybe the gamekings were shot at deer at longer distances than I shot with the corelocks. Cant remember. But without a doubt the Hornady's I have used always exited.
Let me try and put it a different way. My .243 gets an exit 98% of the time and the 2 times it didnt were using a corelock, but it still put the deer on it's arse.

Going out deer hunting this weekend. My county is one that allows rifles. I have 10acres of land in the southern tier, hope to hit those bucks next year!!
I do have to say, walking into Gander tonight was kinda funny, especially going back to the gunsmith to pick it up. I am not sure what people expect, but guess I don't look like the typical. (shrugs) Funny, anyhoo.

I started out with a .243 many years ago. They definitly didn't have the bullet selections that they do today, but every load I tried in a 100gr bullet had the same results...lost deer. I shot around 20 or sodeer with that rifle. The 1st 10 or 12 with 100gr core lokt, nospart, hornady bt...All wiht the same result, no exit hole and several lost deer. I ended up switching to an 85gr fed hollow point bullet and the deer started dropping. My exit holes werebigger and the blood trails were alot better. I do agree that different bullets act differently from different guns(shew alot of differents in there). I was still having to trail them a good bit but Ididn't loose anydeer after switching. My dad and uncle got tired of trailing deer every weekend (I was 12-13yrsold)so we sold the 243 and I stepped up to a 270. Since then I've only lost 2 deer..both dueto poor shot placement. After hunting with a 243, I personally(IMO) don't think a 243 is an adequate deer gun. I'm not saying it won't killa deerbut I think by stepping your round up to a 7/08 or 308 you will have alot better results with the same or similar recoil. I've heard and experienced more lost deer shot with a 243 than any other common deer round out there. I cringe everytime my wife wants to bring her's hunting with us. I wish I could get her to trade it in ona 7/08 or 270. She killed her 1st deer with it so it will probably be here for a while.
