my father uses the same gun.....he doesn't have too much trouble but once in a while it will jam...He shoots 180gr winchester bullets....not sure of type....will have to ask him.
I think it is just a semi thing.

Well...

As far as what the gunsmith did with the "metal parts", I have no idea. I asked him to look at the rifle because of the problems I was having. He suggested tearing down the rifle, cleaning it, re-assembling it, and test firing. After re-assembly, the test firing worked fine. But again, it wasn't cold out.

My rifle is Pre-64 (Serial NO. 46600), and I'm trying to figure out if grandpa had any recall work done on it before I got it. I don't remember the gunsmith saying anything about a recall, but that was a few years ago.

I have no idea if what the gunsmith did had any effect on the performance of the rifle or not.

I have no idea what causes the problem (cold weather only). I always assumed it was oil related, but I'm assuming the gunsmith would have cleaned any excess oil off, and didn't apply to much.

After reading a few posts, I could try finding new mags. That might help.

Maybe I'll just take it to a local gunsmith again, and see what has been, or can be done.

Thanks,

you should be able to go back to wincherster and they can do a seach to see if the gun was return for repair it might take a while for them to find it sents they have close the doors but you might get lucky.

I think you have some easy fixes (possibly) suggested right here.
First, if you feel your original gunsmith is a trusted and experienced guy, I'd take it back to him and explain your issue...cold weather functioning. He could re-clean it and lube it with one of the "dry" products mentioned earlier, and I would think he'd probably do this for much less than the origianl charge since he worked on the gun and you still have an issue. I'd also ask him if he has any ideas.
Winchester may have records of your gun if it was repaired under recall. And if they don't have those records they may be able to confirm that your gun does require some work.
Those Win 100's are little beauties ... when they're working.

Refrowridge .... you are one lucky guy. My dream (one of 'em anyway) is to have both a Winchester 100 and a Winchester 88 BOTH in .284
What a sweet woods round. In my opinion the .284 was years ahead of it's time, and in stronger actions it is a surprising performer.

You got that right I got it at a gun show about 30 years ago and fell in love with it. you are right it was a round ahead of it time and so was the .264 mag. I had a guy offer me $1000.00 for the .284 and I told him he did not have enought money to buy that gun from me. It is in 95% or better the sad part is I don't like to carry it in the woods it is that good of shape.

I hear ya on not wanting to carry it. My dream is to find an '88 and a '100 in "decent" shape, maybe slightly marred stock, a few bare spots on the metal, but functionally perfect. Then I would feel ok about carrying them to my hearts content. Trouble is I think I'll have to pay a minimum of $750 for either of the models and then only if I find somebody that isn't astute about these gems.
I have a stable of 6.5 X 55's and one 7 X 57, but the .284 just has the punch and enough slippery-ness (can I use that word??) to be a near perfect round for everything from coyotes to elk, with the right situation. But in the lever (maybe even a '99 Savage!) it would be pretty smooth!

I have 3 friends who own mod 100's two are jammers and 1 isn't. They all are beautiful and quiet accurate, but two of them may as well be single shots. Cold weather isn't an issue here as much of our hunting is done at well above freezing. The one that works as it should is used with win silvertip ammo, all the guy will hunt with.

Someone suggested in an earlier post on magazines, and not being able to be fully loaded. My dad still uses grandpa's Win 100 in 308 every deer season. He has 2 magazines for it, one I believe is for a 284 and the other is a 308 mag. I know he can't load them to full capacity or it jams up on him. I have only shot the gun a few times, it has alot of sentimental value to my dad (and me), and I don't want to use the gun and have something bad happen. I'm not sure if he has cleaned the gun in 20 years, he wipes it down with oil after using it, but has never cleaned the action. I have seen his go full auto twice over the years. That is always interesting when that happens...LOL
