Default .270 accuracy

I'm looking at some new guns and i was wondering how far out a .270 will reach and still be accurate. and how far out a .270 mag will reach out and be accurate?

Actually, not totally so DG. The bullet can become unstable in flight due to lack of spin. Also, the BC's of alot of bullets are not that high and will become even more unstable, hence the reason for .308 and heavy bullets with BC's greater than .5 or so.

I think what you are asking is effective range without using mildot or bullistic plex scopes or guessing how much to shoot over an animal to hit your mark without the bullet travel being +/-3" or so from zero. +/-3" is my comfort zone anyway. If you sight in a .270Win at 250 yards with an 130gr spitzer with BC of .436 at 3060fps velocity, that would be the max you would probably want to, to get effect sighting on your game. In other words, the bullet wouldn't rise up more than ~3" over your zero up to 250 yards and would drop 3.5" at 300 yards with a velocity of around 2400fps. So I wouldn't feel confident in taking the shot past there where you had to guess on a deer sized animal. So IN MY OPINION. 300 yards would be your limit of this round without target turrets or something like that. Only thing a WSM will do is give you maybe another 250fps or about .5" difference in drop at 300 yards. So your drop at 300 yards would be 3.0" if sighted in at 250 yards.

You might be able to sight in at 300 yards but the bullet would elevate to 4.1" at 150 yards and I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting a deer at 150 yards knowing I could be 4.1" high worse case. Still only buys you 50 yards. And doesn't buy you much with wind drift either. The WSM would buy you .5" in difference of wind drift at 300 yards with 10mph wind at 90degree angle.

Saying all that, I still like the 270WSM and WSM family. All my shooting buddies have had great luck out it and even exceeding the .300Win Mag velocities. I think the fat cases are a good idea for accuracy also. So I would shoot either one at a deer or even an elk.

I don't know which .270 Mag you're talking about but I've shot a .270 Wby Mag for 14 years and am here to tell you that it is one of the most impressive long-range rounds you can imagine, and it does it with very manageable recoil. I have shot many calibers at many types of animals, including such big numbers as the .338 Win Mag and the .300 Wby Mag, but if a 400 pt B&C bull showed himself across a canyon at say, 500 yards, and he was out in the open, and I had someone with me to spot, and the wind was right, and the light was right, and I had a perfect rest, the only rifle I would consider taking that shot with would be my .270 Wby Mag.

The .270 Win. will take game up to the size of caribou at any range at which YOU are competent to hit them in a vital spot! It is NOT a question of the cartridge's effective range as much as it is a question of your competence as a rifleman! Many head of big game has been killed with this round at ranges of more than 400 yards. I( have done it a couple of times myself. The 150 grain Sierra boattail is about as good a bullet, from the ballistic standpoint, as any!! If your twist is 1/10" or faster, (mine is 1/9&quot, it will stabilize any spitzer up to 160 grains just fine! The 270 Weatherby has a definite advantyasge over the .270 Win., but, in a 24" or longer barrel, there's not enough difference between the new .270 WSM and the old .270 WCF to justify replacing an old .270 WCF rifle that still has a good barrel.

Keep yore powder dry!!

So all you super duper experts, I wonder why at 1000 yard benchrest comps, I don't see anyone with a 270Win? I wonder why they all got these 6.5-284's and 300Ultras with these high BC's.

Why with every simple question anyone asks on this board must we always go into the "philophy of skill and all". "philophy of "we owe it to the animal" Bla, bla bla, boring, boring boring. Why can't people just anwser peoples questions with just facts. You guys crack me up.

As far as the 1000 yard club, there is alot of long range clubs, if that is what you are asking. I go see some of the competitions up to 1000 yards every once in a while.

Oh Bigcountry Stubblejumper is going to get on you for saying the 300 wsm is just as fast/er than the 300 win mag you know how much he hates those short mags.

Well, I am not saying all 300WSM are faster than the win mag. Just that in alot of powder configurations, my friends are getting velocities hotter than there 300Win Mag.
