357 mag. on deer???
i know a lot of people think the 357 is light to use on deer out of a hand gun. but what about out of a rifle??
espicaly now that some of the ammo company's are loading true deer bullets in the 357. i think fed. has a 180gr hard cast out. win has some kind of hunting hp out and i just saw in a gun magzine were rem. is comming out with a core lock hp 160gr "i think" for hunting.
how much volicty will the 357 pick up out of a rifle?
and why do the ammo companys load HP in handgun hunting ammo?
i have all ways liked fp or jsp for handgun hunting.

RE: 357 mag. on deer???
with the right bullet design, weight, and shot placement, the 357 rifle is a very effective deer rifle.
you'll probably get more help asking your question here...

RE: 357 mag. on deer???
with some steaming handloads id bet a 180gr pill would go say 2000fps. so i think that would be very effective. though since i do hunt with a .357 handgun then i might be biased

I belive in this months guns and ammo. They said the 357 out of a pistol was enough for deer within 50yds. Out of a rifle the range might be extended.

RE: 357 mag. on deer???
I try to keep my shots under 30 yds. wih the hand gun. What got me to thinking of the 357 in a rifle is the 16 in. barrld win. carbine. it would be a light plinker for my doughter and my wife. i keep a good suply of 38 and 357 to feed my hg. it would all so be a good truck gun\home defince. with the posibilty to be a deer gun on acasion. i had a 357 mrilan about 15 years ago. but one of my buddys offerd me enought i knew he wanted it way more than i did. i never got around to replcing it. "used a 30-30 insted" now i think i want a pistol cal. carbine agan. the choices are 45 colt,44,and 357. 45ammo is hard to find here and expincie. the 44 i think will be to much in some aeras of use.

RE: 357 mag. on deer???
winchester's 158 gr. JHP super x has 715 lbs of energy at 100 yds, definately more than enough power to take deer cleanly with an expanding, 35 cal bullet.
several friends of mine use them, and they work quite well. CorBon's 180 gr. SP will lay deer down hard out to 150 yds when fired from a rifle.
the CorBon 200 gr. HC works well on deer, if you shoot through the shoulder. i've also seen it account for a ~400 black bear at about 60 yds.
on the marlin talk forum, a fellow mentioned that he harvested a nice elk (i believe it weighed about 700 lbs.) with his 357 carbine and 180 gr. HC handloads.
the extra barrel lenghth will allow the 357 to do everything that a 35 Rem. thompson pistol will do.
good luck, should be more than enough for deer...happy hunting
