Default RE: 357 mag. on deer???

winchester's 158 gr. JHP super x has 715 lbs of energy at 100 yds, definately more than enough power to take deer cleanly with an expanding, 35 cal bullet.

several friends of mine use them, and they work quite well. CorBon's 180 gr. SP will lay deer down hard out to 150 yds when fired from a rifle.

the CorBon 200 gr. HC works well on deer, if you shoot through the shoulder. i've also seen it account for a ~400 black bear at about 60 yds.

on the marlin talk forum, a fellow mentioned that he harvested a nice elk (i believe it weighed about 700 lbs.) with his 357 carbine and 180 gr. HC handloads.

the extra barrel lenghth will allow the 357 to do everything that a 35 Rem. thompson pistol will do.

good luck, should be more than enough for deer...happy hunting
