Default Old .22 single shot bold action rifle

I went to a my uncle's this weekend for a visit and i told him i was getting my hunting and firearms liscences soon, before i left he pulled out an old .22 single shot bold action rifle. He told me it was handed down to him by his grandfather in law and that it was around 90years old or something like that. I took a quick look over and from what i could see the barrel was very rusted on the outside of it, i was wondering if it would be still usable if i was able to clean out the barrel properly and remove the rust on the outside and that brings me to my second question I was wondering if there was anything i could do to get rid of the rust and if it would be safe to use afterwards? I was thinking of maybe soaking the barrel in CLR or something similar. I also got a chance to open the bolt and it worked great and the stock was in great condition, i was quite suprised to say the least.
Thanks;

Eric

P.S. I taking my hunter's ed and FAC's this weekend, I should have both liscences very soon <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I just got off the phone with my uncle and it turns out that its in perfect working order and that he has been taking care or it and cleans it regularly and there isn't as much rust on the outside of the barrel as I thought there was. I also dug up a box of about 20-40 .22 bullets in my dad's hunting stuff to use next time I go over to my uncle's. My grandfather is also gonna be handing me down a .22 when we go visit him next time.

Congratulations son and welcome into the sacred circle of the smoke stick. Many of us have an old bolt action .22 handed down by fathers or grandfathers.

As far as rust removal there are a variety of things. WD 40 removes rust from bolds and will from your gun. many of the solvent based cleaners will remove some level of it. brake cleaner will. bet if you asked your grandfather he would have a solution for it.

swab the bore and look down it. get it nice and shiny clean. odds are there isn't a thing wrong with the gun. Again Congratulations.
