Hello all,
I usually use a .300 Savage for rifle season, but this year am using a .308 Win. I was wondering recoil wise how they line up. I have shot a .270 Win short mag if it helps you all on how much i have handled. Any help would be very appreciated. I know recoil doesnt really matter at all when hunting...but i just usually like a general idea at what im facing at the range..and i havent got to shoot the .308 yet.
Thanks for any help
Mike

You should not get as much and certainly not more from the 308 than from the 270 WSM.. My Browning A-Bolt Light weight Stalker in 308 has a fair kick to it but it a very light rifle. I have a bad shoulder and the 308 does not bother it until I get to about ten rounds. The recoil may be a bit more than the 300 Savage but not much.

I don't think that there is much of a comparison lol. The 308 will have more recoil, but it is not at all an unpleasant round to shoot (being the choice of some of the MOST ACCURATE target shooters) and the 308 will give you a noticeable ballistic advantage. Good luck with the 308, I really do think that you will enjoy it.

If the guns are of the same weight, and you shoot the same weight bullet from each, there won't be a lot of difference between the .300 Savage and the .308. How well (or poorly) the stock shape of each rifle transmits the recoil to your cheek and shoulder will be more significant than the slightly greater power of the .308.

You shouldn't have any problems at all shooting the .308. My friends 10 year old son shots a .308 all day long with no problem and he is not very big at at. Right now I have a bad wrist and Ihave to be really careful what I do with my wrist but I can shoot a .308 without any problems.

I shot the 308 at the range the other day. It was a Mauser and had the same recoil as the 30-06. Of course it had a steel butt plate instead of a recoil pad.
Kicked pretty darn good to me.

Chuck7....thats what my .300 Savage is.....its a remington 760 and has a steel butt plate. I didnt think it was that bad though, but of course they are different calibers and models.
