If the guns are of the same weight, and you shoot the same weight bullet from each, there won't be a lot of difference between the .300 Savage and the .308. How well (or poorly) the stock shape of each rifle transmits the recoil to your cheek and shoulder will be more significant than the slightly greater power of the .308.
