Damage to deer with a 12 Ga slug may be extensive.....but it depends where they are hit.
Range I'd say is 100 yards and some can actually increase that.
Both 12 and 20 Ga slugs are very lethal and no one using them is undergunned. If you're woods hunting even where rifles are allowed the use of slugs is not a bad idea. They are serious deer medicine.

My experience is (i use 12 gauge w/Brenneke slugs - usually 3-inch mags) they drop where I shoot them. I haven't had to go looking for a deer in, well so long ago I can't remember when. Some shots, you'd think they were hit by lightning. I love slugging deer in Illinois and haven't found too much damage, either. I'm hitting them out to 150 yards or so.

I have shot several deer with slugs. Other than a large hole through them, the damage is always less than what I think it should be. It seems like the slugs just punch a hole in them. I see more damage from my rifle where the bullets expands and just tears stuff up. A big hole through the vitals is very effective. I have never had one run more than 30 yards. The blood trails are very impressive.
The farthest I have shot is around 130 yards. Just go to the range and find out what the trajectory is with your gun and slug combination.

Okay I've got a burning question. Who has shot a deer with a slug? I would think that a slug, especially a 12ga. slug would tearup alot of a (whitetail) deer, am I right? Also what is the range of a slug out of a 12ga?

The full-size, pure-lead, "rifled" Foster-type slugs are exceedingly poor deer loads. I have seen deer hit well with several 12-ga. Foster slugs run over 100 yards showing no sign of being hit at all, and the blood trail didn't start untilthey had covered over 50 yards. And BUCKSHOT is even worse!!
The only deer I ever lost was hit with a 12-ga Foster slug. I have never lost a deer shot with any gun that had a rifled bore, and this includes muzzleloaders shooting roundballs!
