James, the .303 were used in Canada and Africa for many, many, many years
as was the .30-30 in the US.

How about wanting something other than a lever gun or maybe wanting something with more effective range and better ballistics than a flying brick? The simple fact of the matter is there are many non-magnum cartridges out there that are far better than the 30-30.
Not all .30-30's are lever guns. Do some reloads in a bolt gun or single shot and you can load those same bullets as are used in all the other .30 caliber cartrdiges. The non-flying brick style ones. Anyways, my point initially was that today people ant bigger and badder just to say they have it. "Got a hemi" yeah, but you really think everyone that brags on having one, uses it to it's capacity? No it's for bragging rights. Men buy large lawn tractors to mow thier tiny lawns, why - braggin rights ("yeeah, I got me a XAR 3500 mutli this and fueled that over super torqued huge displacemtn one for my 1/4 acre.) Same with guns. No other group of people are more willing to tell of thewares they own than gun enthusiasts. This has just trickeled over into the hunters as well. They don't want the old .30-30 because there's no "big-boy" status to it now. It's not the Hemi of the cartridges so there's no braggin about owning one.Give a guy two identical rifles, one in .30-30 the other in a newer, more modern cartridge, magnum or not, and they'll brag about owning the more powerful one. Some without even knowing anything about the cartridges much more than media advertising.

I know. I have hunted in Canada a lot and I don't think I know a hunter up there that does not have a 303. Or did have at one time. The 303 has taken every species of game in Africa for many many decades. Even with the old cordite loads. I have a couple of 303's the best one is a Long Branch from Canada. It was hard to find one with a good bore. I went through 4 or 5 before I found the Canadian one. I have only shot it with the open military sights but it groups well. I had a nice Jungle Carbine model too for several years. The 7x57 fits that mold as well.

James, in 1960 I bought a .303 jungle carbine with a flash surpressor.
I bought it in Hawaii and gave it to a Felipino in the Philippines in
1961.

The 30-30probly did kill the most deer but you never can be sure but I'm sure that in the future this will change.
